FALL SONNENBLUME/AIDA

As soon as Greece was taken care of, Guderian is tasked with what he dreaded most: rescuing the Italians from their own incompetence in Africa … at the Tribunal, he mentioned that one of his only regrets was allowing the Italians anywhere near anything of strategic importance…

“The Italians did not fare that well in Africa.”

“They elevated incompetence to levels previously unseen. All they were tasked to do was to drive the British out of North Africa. And they couldn’t do that.”

“So you had to go bail them out.”

“Either that or allow the entire southern flank to be exposed to the British. Which was unacceptable. The first and foremost thing that had to be taken was the Suez – if that could be held, then the British would be forced to march through the desert, something that could be controlled.”

“Why do you think the Italians were unable to make much progress against the British?”

“Genetics. Leadership. That insufferable love of oily food. Who can say?”

February 17th, Guderian makes an amphibious assault on a lightly defended Port Said … and two days later, takes Cairo … on the 23rd, he takes Fayum, trapping the British forces in upper Egypt while von Kleist takes the Suez by the 26th …

“You land on the Monday, and by the end of the week, you have sealed the British fate in Egypt.”

“That is a gross over-simplification, but essentially yes.”

Tactical and Close Air Support squadrons pound Alexandria for a month while Guderian waits outside the gates … finally, on March 14th, he assaults the fortress and in a fierce battle lasting two days, manages to take it off the British … March 19 – the last remnants of the British army in Egypt and North Africa are destroyed in Fuka .. March 20 - von Kleist takes Jerusalem and on the 27th, the last British in Palestine are destroyed.

“It’s a remarkably efficient campaign. Within one month, you had managed to achieve more than the Italians had in six months.”

“Hardly the crowning glory of one’s career, when you put it that way - ‘managed to achieve more than the Italians did.’ "

“Taking the Suez would help the Italians stave off any Allied landings in their territories.”

“Yes, and it would allow me to escape my worst nightmare, that of re-capturing Rome from the Canadians after the Italians surrender it without a shot being fired to a Mountie regiment. Once the British in Palestine were destroyed, it was just a matter of making sure there were no Allied sympathizers, such as Saudi Arabia, who might allow the British or the Americans landing rights, and a chance to reclaim the Suez.”

“At which time you turned your gaze to the north, and Fall Weserburg.”

“Correct.”

“And at this time, you submitted to Berlin your revised plan for Operation Barbarossa, a plan which you put forward a May, 1941 start date.”

“Yes.”

“The problem with the plan, as I see it, was that you envisioned both Norway and Turkey to being staging points for Axis forces, as well as Finland joining in the campaign. Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t they all neutral at this point?”

“Yes, they were. A minor complication.”

I do love how he thinks. Neutrals are a 'minor complication'. ;) Actually there are other things I like well, his .. ah .. confidence in his Italian allies for one :D

I do believe you've nailed Heinz almost to a tee! He was always... how shall we say, undiplomatic when it came to doing what it took to achieve the most with the least cost to his troops, and making sure that not even the scraps were tossed away!

I only really got to know just how important he was in real-life while writing this.. strange that he isnt in the Rommel fame among the chattering class...

You know one interesting thing about this is that one can somewhat agree with him. The Swiss, by acting as a haven for those wishing the Reich harm, could sort of (very sort of I admit, but nonetheless) be considered as having violated their own neutrality and thus become fair game. The tribunal is as self-serving as Guderian or his fellow officers.

Our Chronicler appears rather naive. Is he actually that naive, or is it an act, or is Guderian so completely amoral it has shocked the chronicler into innocence?

Naive? An act?

What is curious about Switzerland is why the Germans never invaded it... seems kind of silly to leave this gaping hole in your empire, but I assume that they were too busy planning that brialliant invasion of Russia and that 6 week diversion into Yugoslavia that cost them the chance to hit Moscow before winter...

very nice update! 39 divs against little swiss? :p i wonder if guderian put some nazi gold there..:p

I am sure there are a few paintings stored there.. jsut for safe keeping of course... :)

The Munich Group...conspiracy time? ;)

Potentially worse - a double conspiracy (like double secret probabation, only more complex)... :p

YOU ATTACKED SWITZERLAND.... they are so neutral I never even thaught it was possible *glances out the window* you know just when you are driving around you still see the massive bunkers built into the mountains from WWII, it was a big secret back then but in under 24 hours of German invasion the Swiss army was to abandon the north, seal all the mountain passes and just keep the Germans out on the other side of the Alps. Considering these mountains are on average 3 kilometres high I plain dont see how foot soldiers would have got across, still the Germans had their Paratroopers so the valiant Swiss could only have held out for so long :)

How long could have the Swiss held off the Germans? A few weeks? Months? I;ve never really read into a study made about this...

His love of Italy...

A dutch offensive! A sight to behold - and swiftly crushed! Interesting as ever.

I saw the Jap DOW and then looked over at my Dutch flank and envisioned them rolling into Berlin... :(

Well, France has fallen, who will be next, the Soviets of the Brits?

I think the British are a luxury at this point, while the Russians and those 200+ divisions are the main course... I think an early Sealion is not only unfair to the AI, but also insane - you just wouldnt commit 60 or 70 divisiont with all those Russian infantry on your doorstep...

Nice update, fast and good work in Yugoslavia. An amphibious assault for Barbarossa, well that sure sounds interesting, I wonder how you managed to do that, shall be looking forward to see it :)

Its actually a 4 pronged offensive: The Finnish Sector, the Central Sector, the Amphibious Operation and the Turkish Sector...

-Delta- said:
Yes, allying with or going through Turkey seems a really nice option as well, from there you could go directly for Baku when your Barbarossa starts.

Ally with Turkey? Turkey is always best carved up, isnt it?

Actually, considering the whole situation, Switzerland would've been really difficult to take by force. A good part of it is located within the Alps, so we're talking mountain warfare against a prepared enemy (Switzerland had mobilised in September 39) with profound knowledge of the territory. Not to forget that it would piss off quite a lot of other countries that prepared to stay neutral in the conflict.

You need to see the situation in terms the game can't simulate, an army marching through Switzerland would've to take each and every single mountain valley by force, with every male citizen not only trained in the use of a gun but actually coming back every year to refresh his training. And this country was prepared to take the fight to the mountains, where it probably would've been virtually impossible to defeat them without huge losses.

FALL WESERBURG

“The development of the situation in Scandinavia requires the making of all preparations for the occupation of Denmark and Norway by a part of the German Armed Forces - Fall Weserubung. This operation should prevent British encroachment on Scandinavia and the Baltic; further, it should guarantee our ore base in Sweden and give our Navy and Air Force a wider start line against Britain. In view of our military and political power in comparison with that of the Scandinavian States, the force to be employed will be kept as small as possible. The numerical weakness will be balanced by daring actions and surprise execution.” – Guderian’s directive towards Fall Weserburg, November 23, 1939.

“When you were directed towards preparing the invasion of Scandinavia, you were told to keep the forces small.”

“We could not afford sending fifty or sixty divisions into the mountains and forests of the north. We had to maintain a steady presence on the Russian front, just in case the Russians decided to spring a trap on us. Not to mention that manpower was starting to grow thin, given all the troops necessary to safeguard our burgeoning coastline.”

“Were you at all worried about this lack of overwhelming firepower?”

“Not at all. Intelligence estimated that the bulk of forces we would likely encounter were infantry and nothing more. Hardly a match for armor. As well, they had no air cover.”

“If you don’t own the sky, you die.”

“Correct, Chronicler.”

“On May 14th, you declared war on Denmark, and five days later, they gave up the ghost.”

“One would think the national language was French as opposed to its native Danish.”

You really don’t like the French, do you General? Is it because they were more interested in posing behind that Maginot Line of theirs instead of fighting? I wonder if the loathing of the French and the Italians stems from that fact, that they were more interested in endless debate and posing in parades and making sure the trains all ran on time, then in getting down and dirty in a foxhole. Does a mind like yours tolerate weakness? Or does it only respect those who stand up and make a stand, like the Yugoslavs did, regardless of the consequence, because it’s the right thing to do - you are going to get crushed, but at least you will go down with honor. Is that why you don’t like the French or the Italians? Do you think they have no honor?

“On the 25th, you declared war on Sweden and met some resistance on the beaches of Jonkoping.”

“Von Mannstein directed his forces to a narrow shoal where they were initially pinned down, but it was a brief interlude. Nothing more.”

“You managed to make it to Stockholm on June 7th, which fell a day later.”

“A lovely city. The Museum of National Antiquities is breathtaking.”

“But not a city that put up much resistance.”

“Chronicler, you expect every city and every hill and every dale to put up this massive wall of resistance. Is this the American attitude in full bloom? That every nook and cranny is worth fighting to the death? Stockholm had a minimal defensive force. Nothing more.”

June 18 – Sweden surrenders unconditionally … ten days later, Norway gets the declaration of war, and surrender on the 10th of July. Poland, France, Norway, Greece - it was like Joe Louis taking on that Kraut boxer – they step into the ring and cant hit the canvas quick enough.

“With Norway and Sweden in your pocket, your northern flank was covered.”

“It also allowed us to put diplomatic pressure on Finland.”

“Who were caught between a rock and a hard place.”

“An apt colloquialism.”

“Which brings us up to your August 6th declaration of war on Switzerland and your first awareness of The Munich Group.”

Basically, if its not in Europe, they get puppet status... the TC is just a killer otherwise... they also help free up troops, as eventually they can guard their own shores...

Great AAR. I'm impressed at how aggressive you're being. I'm always cautious in my German campaigns, being mortally afraid of the U.S. for some reason.

Well, since I am at war with them, not a really big concern... :)

The Soviets would be a concern if they were more aggressive...

Nice work dag231. The way things are going, I'm surprised Guderian is behind bars!

I know this AAR is more about the narrative with Guderian, but I would love to know your belligerence and how many garrison divisions you have. Both must be pretty high. :)

THE MUNICH GROUP II

“When did Kleinheisterkamp first make his concerns known to you?”

“As I mentioned, after Zurich fell we had a candid conversation as to the direction that the campaign was taking. He outlined his concerns that the engine had gone off the rail, so to speak.”

“Meaning what?”

“That a war that started as a means to avenge the travesty of Versailles and create lebensraum for the German people had morphed into something more. Something beyond the intentions. The invasion of Switzerland, he thought, was symptomatic of what was happening.”

“Invasion for the sake of invasion.”

“That is very close to what he put forward. That we were conquering just for the sake of it being there. My response to him was what I told you – Switzerland and the others were necessary because of the reasons I have already outlined.”

“Did you become concerned at this point over his philosophy?”

“No – why should I? A man’s political beliefs are his own, as long as they didn’t interfere with his ability to perform his duty. And Matthias was an exceptional adjutant.”

“Were his concerns philosophical in nature? Theoretical?”

“When there was a legitimate strategic target involved or an immediate concern – such as the control of Gibraltar or Oresund or the Suez or even access to the Bosporus, Matthias recognized the need to retain control. It was extraneous targets of opportunity – extraneous in his opinion – that he had a problem with.”

“Were you aware at how widespread the Munich Group was?”

“I knew that Matthias shared his beliefs with others within the General Staff, and others within the officer corps, but at this time I was not aware that there was any formal structure involved.”

I wonder…

“And, lets not forget, Chronicler, that Berlin had a strict policy about the retention of lands outside of our claimed core. Unlike the British or the French or the Belgians or any of the other colonial powers, we didn’t want a vast overseas empire, and we did more to liberate vast amounts of peoples that any other conquering nation.”

“Liberation in the sense of giving each country their own national socialist dictatorship.”

“The ability to vote, even if the outcome upsets your American liberal democratic sense, is still far better than being held in thrall under a colonial rule, isn’t it?”

“Its not true democracy when the election is a foregone conclusion, is it General?”

“It is still better than what the British or the French would have ever offered. Can you honestly see the British giving up India? In allowing the Indians to have their own say in their affairs? Or the Belgians allowing the peoples of the Congo their own rule?”

“But isn’t what the Munich Group was expressing is that you had no right to even step into the affairs of these nations? That what happened outside the borders of Europe, outside of the immediate needs and security of Germany – these things were not meant to be meddled in?”

“Matthias was naïve in that regard. What happens in Rangoon or in CapeTown or in Damascus – it all affects greater Germany.”

“If a butterfly flaps his wings in Tibet, a breeze is felt in Berlin.”

“Very good, Chronicler.”

“Which would fit in nicely with your no neutrals policy. Did Kleinheisterkamp see your way of thinking?”

“No, and I would not expect him to. I prize officers who can think for themselves – I am not fond of boot-licking sycophants. If I was, my General Staff would be comprised of Italians.”

Ouch.

“So, at this point, Kleinheisterkamp has made you aware of his concerns, but you dismissed them as being naïve and refused to address them other than point out that he was being naïve.”

“I gave him my point of view and left it at that.”

“And when did you begin to understand that the Munich Group was something more, and that it could turn out to be a potential distraction, at best, or at worst a problem?”

“Not until Karachi.”

“Okay. So in the meantime, following the fall of Switzerland you were busy planning Fall Gisela and Fall Gertrus.”

“Correct.”

Mmm, I wonder if this Munich Group is what leads to his downfall. Possible certainly.

This Munich group make some good points, but seeing Guderian as this strong leader I think he shall be able to handle them if they try to do anything smart. Really good work in the Middle East and Scandinavia. Looking forward to more :)

Ah, I do so love this AAR. If only Heinz had been given this much power in RL, things would have been so much different!

Sadly it is due to the fact that while Heinz created the machine that was the Blitzkrieg due to factors from above (i.e. the General Staff and Hitler) he was not allowed to run the machine. Rommel was simply one of the lucky generals that was allowed to play with Heinz's machine and prove how correct he was about the power of the tank.

FALL GISELA / FALL GERTRUS

“Portugal and Turkey represent the last two strategic objectives for you before Barbarossa, and you dealt with them fairly efficiently.”

“Portugal represents a failure in diplomacy. They had been courted and wined and dined, but refused to see the reality of the situation they were in. Left unchecked, they were a potential glaring chink in the armor of Europe. Even neutral, they could allow landing rights to the British or the Americans, who could then drive through the countryside and target Gibraltar.”

“Exposing your weak flank – the Italians.”

“Gisela was a fairly easy operation. The Portuguese had little in terms of defensive structures of capabilities, and it was a simple matter to invade via Faro and drive north along the coast.”

“The capture of Lissabon also allowed for unrestricted aviation warfare against Allied shipping.”

“Yes. I considered it to be one of the most pivotal strategic prizes. If you capture Lissabon and build up the airfields in the region, you can launch sortie after sortie against Allied shipping ant task forces. Not only on the coast, but out into the close Atlantic.”

“Gertrus was a little more complicated.”

“Of course – when one has to deal with an amphibious landing and destroy an enemy fleet, it always is.”

“The Italian fleet was instrumental towards the success of the operation.”

“Surprisingly so. Perhaps the Italian army should change its name to Land-Navy, and maybe some defining moments of courage and ability would be absorbed into their psyche.”

Guderian launched twinned attacks on Istanbul and Ismit, the latter by amphibious assault, while his Panzers in Syria keep things in check. The whole thing takes less than a month. With Finland in the Axis, Guderian had his 4-Front war: Finland and Scandinavia, the Centre Theater, his Amphibious Assault, and the Turkish Front.

“And remember, Chronicler, that Turkey was not just a strategic prize, but also a potential enemy. Their Foreign Minister, Saracoglu, had recently been to Moscow for state dinners, and there was talk of Turkey formally coming into the Russian sphere of influence. With their control of the Bosporus, this would have been completely unacceptable, as it would have exposed the entire southern theatre to Russian mischief.

“Which brings us up to Barbarossa – your plan to defeat the Soviet Union and provide lebensraum for Germany.”

“Not defeat. Eviscerate.”

Its astounding the aura of confidence he projects. They are greasing his noose as we speak, yet this could just be a normal Sunday afternoon for him, a respite with a bit of tea before going out and conquering another country or defeating another hopelessly outdated and overmatched army. Is this the last stage of accepting death? Where calm washes over a person as they know there is nothing that can be done so be at peace with one’s world? I don’t know if I would be this calm. I’d want to go out the same way I came in – wet and screaming bloody murder.
