Chapter 2.2: From Russian ice to Chinese seas

Workers of the world rejoice! The hour of your liberation is at hand! In the east rises a new power, one that shines like the burning sun of freedom! For too long the proletariat has been downtrodden by the Bourgeois, and now they attempt to seize what is rightfully yours once again! We will push them out of the east, we shall drive them from the west. There will be no place where the Bourgeois are safe, no corner where the radiant sun of Communism does not shine. United with our Socialist brothers we will bring down hellfire upon the class enemies. all who stand against us will see their day come. Each one of you should strive to be heroes of the soviet union, for heroes you can be. Comrades, we will fulfill the manifesto and bring about a New World Order!

Major General Byrne-Krzycki put down his pen. As Stalin's new military attache, he was required to come up with new speeches for Comrade Stalin about revolutionary zeal and the glory of the working class. The entire job was a joke after he had been at Vladivostok, the sound of the guns still remained fresh in his mind. He had barely escaped the initial Japanese attack, and had rounded up a group of clerks and cooks to buy time for Stavka officers to burn their documents and smash their code machines. After any important materials had been secured, he led the remnants of Vladivostok's garrison in a vicious guerrilla campaign that had, on final estimate, cost the Japanese nearly five thousand casualties and millions of pounds of supplies. After the retaking of Vladivostok, by which time his group had been whittled down to less then a dozen men, Stalin had awarded him a promotion and made the hero of the hour his new attache. Whenever possible he corresponded with his friend in the PLA, Major General Zhang, a veteran of the Long March, who he had met, in time-honored soldiering fashion, over a bottle full of strong alcohol.

Major General Zhang was fighting in the last attack on the Nationalists and was pushing towards the southern mountains with his elite division of light infantry under now-General Lin's command. He had fought beside Chairman Mao throughout the two recent wars and had risen to his rank through merit, starting as a mere Lieutenant at the beginning of the Long March.

News from the front was grim, with Korea retaken after 300 000 Japanese landed at Dailan after the Red Army had pacified it, probably extending the war by another few months.

The Red Army pulled 33 divisions out to Harbin from Nationalist China, which was declared annexed by Chairman Mao on June 28th, a day now proclaimed as Enlightenment Day.

It was not until the next month though that the Japanese had been encircled in Siberia, but Vladivostok was taken and liberated for the fourth time in as many months.

--------OOC---------

There is a story! it's just... not here yet. it comes more into place with the Winter War onwards.

Chapter 2.3: A Freezing Cold War

By Late July the Japanese had been pushed back to the Chinese-Siamese border, the forces of the PLA having claimed most of China with only the paltry southern mountains stopping the final push to reunite the Land of the Dragon.

The fight in the east died off as majority of the Red Army was pulled to the west, as a pact between Germany and the Soviet Union about the fate of Poland was decided, with the eastern half of Poland being given to the Soviet Union. In the depths of a bunker, Byrne-Krzycki wrote to his friend Zhang in November.

“My friend, tensions are high on the Finnish border, as we have made claims, but have limited numbers of troops as the entire army underwent re-organization in Moscow and is being deployed as rapidly as possible to the front. We can only hope the Finns give up, because we are not in a state to fight a war with only the green Leningrad defense district holding down the entire front. The North Sea Fleet was moved to the Baltic, so as to protect from an amphibious landing on our soil. Comrade, the times are going to be tough in the north of Russia, and although our “friend” Hitler has given us this territory I suspect his appetite is insatiable, his need for lebensraum unending. This man is a madman and must be stopped. I have been given an infantry division, but we will not be participating in the main attack, our orders are for another assault, but we are not sure where. Keep safe Comrade.

Byrne-Krzycki

The Major General looked at the current progress reports on technology that he acquired from Stavka before he left. Yakolev was going to finish their new design for the air force in another few weeks, just testing was required before the new design would fly over Russian skies.

The situation in the west looked dire as the majority of the Kola Peninsula was unguarded, but attacks were light, and the air force made a good show of bombing Vipuri, but to little effect as there was no breakthrough in the early days of the Winter War.

The first incursion into Finnish lands was in the south, a major attack at Sortvala, but only after Murmansk and her empty ports had been captured by the Finnish defense force.

Up Next: A secret attack?

Chapter 2.4 The Sun Is Setting, the Whites are Bleeding

October 18 1939

Dear Aleksander,
I have wonderful news for you. Two days ago Japan surrendered to us. Your Marshal Zhukov led a march all the way down the Korean Peninsula with twenty one divisions, and it was subsequently freed as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. Unfortunately the terms of the peace agreement were somewhat of a joke, as Comrade Mao allowed the Japanese to keep some of their holdings, including southern China, Qingdao, and Shanghai. We have no idea why this is so, but rumors from the Politburo talk about a pressing need to modernize. This may be why the majority of the PLA is being re-organized in Yan'an in the hopes of quickly bringing war again to push the invaders out of the mainland entirely. I am leading a division in the reconquest of the breakaway republic of Tibet. I hear war is brewing in Finland, I wish you well in it, but remember that war is not a pretty thing.

To Russia with love;
Mj. General Zhang

November 28 1939

Three quarters of a million men were closing in on the Kola peninsula, where the Finns had been holding their ground admirably. Each step taken by the Red Army was costly, but the Red Air Force dominated the winter skies and the new IL-2 Sturmovnik Close Air Support craft were destroying the enemy, bleeding them as white as the Tsar's armies from the air.

The situation in the Kola Peninsula was looking desperate, as the northern portion was taken by the Finns. In the Kremlin, Stalin was shouting about how could the great Soviet Union possibly LOST ground, including a major shipyard. Something had to be done, so Stavka commissioned a fleet of 6 transport flotillas. As the Red Navy's shells roared overhead a landing was exacted on the unguarded shores of Turku.

From the Files of Aleksander Byrne-Krzycki of the Red Army
We landed on the shores of Turku just outside of Helsinki, the snow whipped around us as two full corps of the Red Army occupied the beachhead and expanded into a break out that brought us into skirmishes on the outskirts of Helsinki. the forces at Kem had pushed north and were closing in on Murmansk, liberating the territory lost to the Finns. Despite what Stalin says, I have no hatred for these people, they defended their land gallantly. It will be a shame to see so many brave men die. As my friend said to me in his letter, war is not pretty.

Excellent, and before Germany is of any threat! :D So, I wonder how Japan will fight America now?

The Politburo meeting was, to say the least, rowdy. And why not? Why did Chairman Mao propose to accept the devils' peace proposal on such generous terms, when we were clearly pressing the advantage? Or so the civilians asked, in some cases (as with our resident industrialist, Comrade Cao; administrative genius he may be, but tactful he is not) quite bluntly and in far more creative terms. Our generals told a different story, however, and the insinuations of cowardice thrown against Marshal Zhu nearly led to him drawing his dadao and forcing Comrade Cao's head to emigrate from his shoulders. I can understand why the civilians are outraged, but I understand why we must make peace more.

As much as it pains me to admit, the People's Liberation Army is crumbling. We were winning, but at horrendous cost. While the devils had upgraded the equipment of nearly all their infantry to a level only seen in the most technologically advanced nations, we were still fighting with, in many cases, weaponry dating from before the Long March, even from the Xinhai Revolution over three decades prior. We may have been able to win through sheer size, but Chairman Mao was not prepared to accept the loss of much of our veteran cadre. Our shock formation, the Eighth Route Army, which I have the fortune to lead, began this war composed entirely of veterans each with almost a decade's worth of experience. As I write this, the percentage of new recruits filling our ranks closes on one in five. Every one of us is prepared to lay our lives down for the motherland, but our experienced core must remain intact to train new soldiers, and Chairman Mao understands this. Hence his acceptance of this insulting 'peace proposal', the reason for which is only known to a select few.

Our evacuation from the areas temporarily ceded to the Japanese is nearly complete, and almost four in five of the civilians living in those areas have come with us, with only the old and infirm choosing to remain. When the devils occupy their ill-begotten land, they will find nothing but ghosts. And the mines that my men have forgotten about. They will be punished for losing their equipment, of course. The cooks are happy - they will have plenty of assistants for the foreseeable future. As for the devils, they will have a fun time trying to maintain their garrisons in our country, and after an admittedly stunning victory for us and humiliating defeat for them, Japanese morale can only drop, as they find themselves fighting our guerrillas in what they will perceive to be a useless war. Soon enough, we will strike again.

Our comrades in the Soviet Union are assisting us with technological development at what can only be described as a heroic pace. Comrade Cao has been working day and night with no sleep and barely any food (maybe that was why he was so irritated?) setting up assembly lines and arranging for production of new weapon and equipment designs. The Type 38 rifle and Type 39 submachine guns will be entering production in bulk shortly, and will be issued to our divisions as quickly as possible. We still have the rest of China to liberate, after all.

- Marching for Mao, an autobiography of Lin Biao. Excerpt dated October 15, 1939.

OOC: And yes, I really was fighting with 1918 infantry, and yes, my starting mountaineers were down to about 85% strength at one point. Fortunately, experience accumulates quickly at the intensity level of the final battles in southern China and Manchuria.

ReadAARs! We of the Politburo pose you a question!

Historically, scientific development stalled in China during the Chinese Civil War and the Second Sino-Japanese War due to instability, and only resumed in the 1950s, after stability had been restored to the nation. However, this is not representative of the situation in this AAR (we have played about half a year past the latest date in this update, and China is reunified fully). Plus, a world power with close to 200 IC that is using skill 2 techteams is just...nonsensical. Given this problem, we have been talking about writing an event for China, named 'The Dragon Awakes'.

Essentially, what this does is sleep all my techteams (many of which used to be Nationalist, and almost all of which are ahistorical anyways), and establish about 10 or so historical techteams (some with founding dates moved forward a few years), most of which are around skill 4-5, with a few at skill 6, nothing better, as well as move my Standing Army slider 3 moves to SA, representing a nationalization of assets and discharge of unneeded soldiers who were conscripted in the haste of the Sino/Russo-Japanese War. Also, the capital is moved to Beijing, and additional leaders (all the non-political ones from Nationalist China, Guangxi Clique, and Shanxi) from all three services are added. Other effects of modernization I will do manually in-game (as in, build IC, infra, airfields, and ports).

Details for the techteams I am thinking of:

PLA General Staff Department
Skill: 6
Specialties: Centralized Execution, Infantry Focus, Individual Courage, Training, Large Unit Tactics

PLA General Logistics Department
Skill: 5
Specialties: Centralized Execution, Infantry Focus, General Equipment, Management

Dalian Naval Academy
Skill: 4
Specialties: Centralized Execution. Large Taskforce Tactics, Seamanship, Naval Training

Nanyuan Flying Group
Skill: 3
Specialties: Centralized Execution, Bomber Tactics, Fighter Tactics, Piloting, Aircraft Testing

Hanyang Arsenal
Skill: 6
Specialties: Artillery, General Equipment, Mechanics, Training

Taiyuan Arsenal
Skill: 5
Specialties: Artillery, General Equipment, Mechanics

Guangzhou Shipyards
Skill: 4
Specialties: Naval Artillery, Naval Engineering, Technical Efficiency, Electronics

Jiangnan Shipyard
Skill: 3
Specialties: Naval Artillery, Naval Engineering, Technical Efficiency

Aviation Industry Administration Commission
Skill: 3
Specialties: Aeronautics, Artillery, Electronics, Technical Efficiency, Rocketry

China Railway Engineering
Skill: 6
Specialties: Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Management, Technical Efficiency

Anshan Iron and Steel Group
Skill: 5
Specialties: Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanics, Management

Chinese Academy of Sciences
Skill: 5
Specialties: Chemistry, Mathematics, Mechanics, Electronics

Cheng Kaijia
Skill: 5
Specialties: Mathematics, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Engineering

Average skill is between 4 and 5, with the 6s representing what China, during this period of time, was best at (land warfare and industry), and the 3s representing air and naval research, which historically China was very poor at until recently. All teams are historical (as opposed to, say, General Armaments Department, which was actually founded in 1998, or North China Industries, formed in 1980...*facepalm*). I realize that some, such as Hanyang Arsenal, are Nationalist originally, but there's no reason why Communist China, after taking the provinces, would choose not to use the equipment and site already existing.

Thoughts? Ideas?

That event looks to be modest and reasonable in my opinion. Seems similar to an event China gets in the CCIP, haven't got it installed at the moment so I can't quote the event text. The PLA Tech teams might be a little too highly skilled, but I suppose this represents the experience gained during the war, the defection or integration of officers from other Chinese factions, and Soviet miltary advisors.

Great AAR by the way

Hey now, last time I checked, this is not the Betting Sun AAR...

Anyways, next update will cover the results of Fading Sun. I get something like 20 INF divisions...

Chapter 2.5 A Christmas Present for Stalin

Twas two days before Christmas
and all through the north,
The officers cried "let us go forth"
the planes screamed down, without a great care
for who they were bombing, right over there
the Finns had rejected the soviet treaty
they simply had said, the request was too meaty

When up on the coast there was a great shout,
Stalin looked at his map to see what was about
And then from the courtyard there came a great roar
Go Zhukov, go Vasilevsky! Go Konev, give them some more!
To the top of the beach, To the top of the peak!
We'll keep on fighting, no matter how bleak!

(December 25th)
This is Pravda Radio, broadcasting into the harsh snows of Finland.
Give up, for your leaders have left you to die! The Finnish army is now surrounded, with a second landing of one corps led by Major General Arya's division!

You have been surrounded and bested good Finns, and you have fought gallantly, but nevertheless your leaders have you fight for a lost cause! They speak lies about the radiant sun of Communist Enlightenment for they wish to keep hold of their corrupt positions of power! You are the ones that sit in your foxholes at night listening to the sound of artillery bombardments against you, with the knowledge that you cant stand up to the irresistible force that is one and a half million men. They are the ones that are sitting in Helsinki drinking warm mead in their homes with their families for Christmas. Remember your families! Do they want you to die this Christmas Day?! Surrender yourselves to the Red Army and you will be given hot food, water, and medical attention. Do not make the slaughter worse then it must be!

This is Pravda Radio broadcasting into Finland, and if you can hear this... Communism is inevitable.

(The Finns did not surrender)

STAVKA high commander General Conan issues an order for the Finns:

----------------------
STAVKA Direktiva No.2

Comrades! As the glorious Red Army advances through Reactionary Finnland's Territory, measures have to be taken to enable the party to establish conditions which promote socialist reforms. As the enemy will inevitably be crushed, two options arise for the Politbyro to choose from:

1. Incorporating Finnland immediately into the Soviet Union as a Socialist Republic,
2. Establish a People's Republic governed by Finnish Communist Party aided by Soviet political advisors.

As this is a matter for the Party Officials to decide, in both cases the role of the glorious Red Army will be important:

A. Several divisions have to be positioned along strategically important locations to protect them against a sudden foreign invasion and/or sabotage on behalf on the enemies of the people.A complete list of the forces needed and their exact distribution will be sent to the appropriate commanders.

B. The formation and Training of a local worker's Army able to protect the region from the above mentioned threats is a difficult task which comprehends the provision and disposal of necessary equipment, resources, knowledge and personell. A complete plan is already under elaboration.

C. In collaboration with political komissars and veterans of the Finish Red Guard the Finnish People's Army's ranks must remain clean of any individual considered to be a potential enemy of the people.

VICTORY AWAITS !!!

yay im a general! can i name my divisions? or do i have to suffer the horrendous names stavka comes up with?

and good job with finland. coastal landings are a rare but useful tactic that should have been used in real life.

first ones gonna be the 'Viipuri Bane' division. i hope i spelled viipuri right...

... or do i have to suffer the horrendous names stavka comes up with?

Comrade Aryan, discipline yourself!
If you do not like the names STAVKA chooses you can always inform us by liaison officers, unless you like the name of some special superb-at-potato-peeling-Brigades who need your proven previous skills as Lt.General serving somewhere near the Afghan border...

i outrank you, now stop this insolence!:p. stavka will provide the logistics and all their other little jobs they do while we smart peoples do the naming!:D
