The Northern Wars ..

(previously the Teutonic Order had been partitioned between Poland-Sweden and Russia) Poland has taken Brandenburgian territory along with e/w pommeria in prev aar)

1552-1553 Russian-Swedish war

(Denmark, Courland and the Hanseatic League supports Russia, Poland supports Sweden)

Ends with Sweden paying 250d in indemnities to Russia. Riga is taken by a Polish-Swedish army, Courland therefore is annexed by the Poles. An extremely bloody war develops beteween Poland and Russia which leads to a status quo. In late 1553 Swedish armies continue to make ineffective sieges on the Hanseatic cities of Mecklemburg and Lubeck. Swedish-Hanseatic truce, leads to Swedes paying 250d to the League.

1561-1567 Russian-Swedish war.

Second round. Russia again declares war on Sweden. Same allies apply. The Hanseatics agree to an immediate peace with Poland. A stalemate Polish-Russian war in the first few years ends in a treaty in 1564. This allows Russia to make an offensive into eastern Sweden. Several cities fall to the Danes and Russians. Their armies are moving all over Sweden by 1565. At the decisive Battle of Ostersund, on October 8th, 1566 a major Swedish army is utterly crushed by the combined armies of Denmark and Russia. Russia demands and takes Karelia from the Swedes a long with 230d indemnities. Danish-Swedish treaty ends in stalemate the Danes cannot get back Skane. 1566-67 the Swedes again make attempts in capturing Mecklemburg, but are unable to do so. Despite this the League pays 157d to the Swedes for peace. The Swedish-Polish alliance is starting to become shaky.

1570-1571 Swedish-Danish war.

In a desperate move to recover much territory lost to their enemies, the Swedish King declares war on Denmark whilst Russia is busy with the Sibir. They ask for our help, but we decline, bringing our alliance to a virtual finale. From the very beginning it is quite obvious the Swedes will lose this war, they are utterly outnumbered. Their desperate sieges in the previous war against the Hanseatic cities cost a lot of lives.. The Russians, with their access to the city via Ingria (taken from the Swedes in prev wars, formerly Swedish partitioned from the Order) are able to conduct a massive coastal invasion of Sweden in the Skagerak. The Swedes are unable to do anything against the assault, the areas of Vastergotland and Bergslagen are unceremoniously handed over to Russian authorities. It is a shattering treaty.

1582-1583 Polish-Russian war

Russians declare war on lone Poland, the Russians are crushed. They lose Vorones (south of Moscow) and must also sign away Ingria a long with Narva, with that their access to the Baltic Sea is revoked. A crushing loss.

1592-1595 Danish-Swedish war.

The Crimeans support Sweden, Russia supports Denmark. Two months into the conflict a Russian army makes a shocking move on Stockholm (out of Vastergotland), but the capital holds without any problems. The Crimeans give the Russians some problems until a 42,000 Russian army forces the capitulation of Kherson, the capital of the Crimeans. On July 17th, At the Battle of Mora, a Swedish army defeats the main Russian force, and this forces a relative status quo. The Danes must pay 119d and lose Narvik to the Swedes.

1607-1609 Danish-Swedish war, Swedish-Polish war.

Poles decide to take the last ourcrop of Swedish soil in the north Baltic lands, Memel, formerly territory of the Order. The Order annexed it from the Hanseatic League, before the Polish-League alliance, some 100+ years ago. The city is captured, after a 3 month siege, a bloody siege, largely successful due to Polish fleet successes against shaky Swedish naval forces. Sep 29th, Memel falls. Danes pillage Gastrikland. It's not until October 14th, that the main Polish Sea Fleet is finally repulsed by the Swedes. This gives them a breathing space in the Baltic for almost 8 months. Despite Polish pressure to hand over Memel, the Swedes refuse. This means the Poles take the initiative into eastern Sweden (from Ingria) and they move on Viborg (Nyland). Jan 15th, 1608, Viborg capitulates. At the Battle of Nyland, March 23rd, a Swedish force is repulsed with heavy losses. Poles move onto Abo, but are unable to lay siege due to too few men, April 12th. At the Battle of Tavastehus, July 15th, 20,000 Poles account for 18,000 Swedes. The city falls Sep 13th. The Swedes agree to a peace, Memel is taken by the Poles a long with 250d paid to the Poles in indemnities. The Danes are also victorious taking back Narvik a long with 250d indemnities.
