Journal of Kolpak family volume 2 1540-1618a.d

Years 1540 to 1447 a.d.

King ordered upgrade of fortifications in our newly conquered territories. We had to take a loan to pay for this. Under may supervision polish traders continued to travel to Novogrod, Flanders and Persia which is a very expensive market. Royal wedding with Bayern improved our relations with that small but loyal principality. King Sigmund II started to lead our armies himself after being unable to find good general. Saxony become Lutheran so we could not renew marriage between royal families. There were 4 rebellions in our Austrian provinces but king put them down very fast.

Year 1548 a.d.

We have new King, his name is Sigmund August. His first decision was to declare war on Astrakhan. By taking some Muslim territories he plans to stop Russian expansion. By this time Russia Annexed Kazan and Golden Horde. Stability dropped to +1 so I ordered large financial spending to improve the situation. In December King agreed to peace treaty with Astrakhan in return for Donetsk and Lugansk. Long live the King.

Years 1549-1560 a.d.

Peaceful years which we used to improve the economy. King financed first Academy in Posen and I ordered construction of brewery in Krakow. Our alliance with Saxony and Bayern was renew to great satisfaction on the nobles in German principalities. We achieved Navy tech (4) Trade tech (4) and Armies tech (6). Our spy stole English maps. We can travel to any part of the world. Russia but blockade on our traders in Novogrod which is giving us reason to attack that pathetic country. Marriages with Spain, Portugal, Kuryland, Venice and Koln were celebrated around Europe. France and Hungary refused to do so. Austrian provinces of our kingdom still are restless but we keep them in control for most of the time.

Year 1560 a.d

Crime and Turkey declared war on us. King dispatched all active armies into south-eastern region. We are not worried by Crime but Turkey is another mater. In Basserbia we fight 4 battles with Turks this year and we loose 3 of them. Our armies are always stronger but do not have good general, only our ability to raise greater numbers of infantry saved us from defeat. We had to take 2 loans (1000 ducats) to finance this conflict. Second army with 80 guns but only 4k infantry under king Sigmund II took Azov and Kalmuk. By the end of a year he was besieging Crime itself/

Year 1561 a.d

Crimea begged for peace. King did agree in return for Azov and Kalmuk. We won this war, total number of polish troops is now 80k with large portion of artillery.

Years 1562-1569 a.d

I decided to take more loans to build up our army. Inflation is on 12% and rebellions break up very often. We acquired Spanish maps and send traders to all markets we can.. Scotland reformed religion. With huge amounts of gold invested in research we achieved infrastructure (5), Armies (7), Navy (5). King ordered to construct governors mansions in all provinces to lower inflation..

Years 1570-1579 a.d.

Styre rebelled with 88k army. That is one big army. Fortunately loyal forces control the capitol. King Bathory becomes General and immediately is dispatched to crush rebellion. Henry Valezy becomes new King for very short time. By the time Bathory moves to styre with 33k army the rebel forces dwindled to 14k during winter. German Order declared war on our kingdom. Bathory with his armies moves across whole country to reach Wieliki. There he receives more fresh troops. Bayern armies is besieging German capitol and takes it. Next year Bathory takes Estonia but casualties are very high. Right after we concluded peace with German Order in which we gat Estonia Russia declared war on us. Denmark joined war on Russia side and sand troops to Estonia. It is a bloody conflict which costs us large numbers of troops on both sides. I am unable to raise more forces because reserves of 100k were already used and I had to pay back the loans. The war ends with status quo. During the war many new rebellions broke up and had to be put down. King had one whole armies of 23k specially erected just to crush those rebellions. After few months we are asked for help by Bayern to fight Wurtenberg. King agree but dose not send any troops. Bayern lost one province before peace treaty.

Years 1580-1586 a.d.

During those years I ordered new fortifications in Donetsk and Lugansk to protect us from Russia and Crime. King decided to put most of resources to Armies research to minimalism the gap in technology between us and Turkey. It become very clear that Turkish forces are much modern after second war with Crimea and Sultan. We crushed Crimean forces but lost most of the battles with Turkish Jasinarys even when we outnumber them 2 to 1. Second war ended in status quo. In 1585 we had armies tech(9). I have very hard time to improve the country because of constant wars and costs that are related to them. Even our traders suffer from lack of funds.

Years 1587-1588 a.d.

We were involved in a conflict with Venice and Hungary after they declared war on us. It ended with status quo after no one was able to take any province. We lost 36k in troops. Another costly war without a profit. Sigmund III Vaza become a king and a general. Armies tech (10)

Years 1589-1596 a.d

King order to convert country to Lutheran religion. He is crazy. Not counter-reformist but Lutheran. It put stability from +3 to -3. He said that we need emigration and money which that religion will give us. He was right about that, treasury received over 1000 ducats from confiscated churches. More people wish to emigrate too but rebellions breakup everywhere. We can't put them down because France, Scotland and Moldavia attacked. French forces were crushed in Danzing and Sigmund III took Prussia which is French. Scotland landed army in Estonia but was pushed back by local garrison. Moldavia took Galicja, Podlasia, Pripet for short time. We were so weak that it took us 4 years to retake all provinces and sign white peace with all the parties. It helped that armies tech is (10) now. After this civil war and Moldavian flood our kingdom is very weak. All the ducats we can spare are used to raise new forces. In 1594 a.d. we had to declare war on Brandenburg because it attacked Saxony which is our ally. That war ended in few months with status quo.

Year 1597 a.d.

Crimea and Turkey declared war on our kingdom again. Sigmund III with 43k armies defeated 33k Turkish army in Bsserbia and moved to Kuban. Second newly formed army was stationed in Basserbia to stop any Turkish reinforcements. By the end of a year Crime asked for peace giving us Kuban and Kerch. King dispatched colonist to 2 provinces in eastern India.

Years 1598-1614 a.d.

Our kingdom had to fight two wars with Brandenburg to stop its expansion. In the process we took Kustin and East Pomerania. Saxony lost one province to Brandenburg. Navy tech (7) and army tech is (11). Huge amounts of many were used to improve fortifications in new provinces. Governors mansions are constructed in the south eastern provinces. We have now 3 wine makers, 1 academy and 1 fishery. Slowly army size is growing but it is still very low.

Years 1615-1618 a.d.

Hungary and Moldavia declared war on Poland. Sigmund III with 41k army and 56 guns attacked Pest. Second army of 45k and 61 guns under one star general was moved from Krakow to Carpatia 3rd, newly created army of 37k was moved from Ukraine to Ruthenia. Palpably because of our tech advantage we were able to storm and take all castles. After taking Pest Sigmund III took Croatia and Serbia, Second Army took Carpatia and Mayar, 3rd took Ruthenia and than attacked Moldavia. After this attack Moldavia accepted status quo. Hungary was almost all conquered but did not wish to give us 3 provinces so we settled down for Pest and Carpatia. As soon we achieved peace with Hungary we had to fight Russia. Tsar declared war and attacked Estonia with 58k army. King decided to move three armies from Hungary to eastern border. One to Belogrod, second to Kursk and 3rd to Wieliki up north. He also arranged reinforcements to be raised in those provinces. By the time the 3 armies moved to the eastern border fresh troops were ready to join them. Russia was unable to take Estonia yet. Sigmund III attacked Bobutjar, second army attacked Vorones and 3rd moved to besiege Riga which is Russian now. After storming the walls Sigmund III moved to take Saratov and 2nd army besieged Litepsk. Riga was ready to crumble under polish guns. After we took Litepsk Russia asked for peace offering Vorones, Bobutjar and Saratov. We did accept. For last 60 years Poland was in constant war and only two of them were our wish. Fortunately Turkey was expending in middle east not in Europe. Russia tool whole Finland and northern Sweden, it also expanded south to Caspian sea. Austria was eliminated right at the beginning making more room for Hungary and Poland. Hungary was able to stop Turkish expansion but at the high cost.

Well played, especially since everyone seems to have been after a slice of Poland.. bit curious about you mentioning of no good generals being present during this period in the game. There should have been at least these three, if not more:

Zolkiewski
Tarnowski
Zamoyski

and maybe 1 or two more. If they didn't appear then maybe there's a bug in the game.

taranowski was used by me but he lost almost all the battles. He always had number advantage over the enemy but he still lost. He was pretty good with taking forts do. One of the other two generals (I am not sure which) was not used because there were no wars at that time. In may opinion only King generals Sigmund II, Sigmund III and Bathory were good. Having one general at the time may be good for small country like Holland or Portugal but is not sufficient for Poland. In many occasions I gad to move General with the army from one side of the kingdom to the other. Attrition killed large % of troops.

Why don't you just reorganize the army. Give the general a 1.000 men cavalry escort and send him off to the next trouble spot?

Whenever possible I try to seperate good leaders from defeated armies and give them a new that's standing by for the purpose. Historical leaders are very important in EU, so you might as well put them to work for the greater glory of your empire ;)

Slowly but surely this AAR becomes very interesting. :) You get attacked very often, even for AI wild, why is this? I envy You for that, because in my own games I often get the feeling that after the first couple of years noone really dares to put up a fight with me (even not with AI agressive) :(

I believe it is because Polish army is always small after fighting a war. Also, all countries with the exception of German states hate me (-200). I was very surprised that Russia did not attack me more often. It has huge armies of low tech. Now Russia can only attack me. Up North it borders Denmark only, and that is it's ally. What is left of Sweden is surrounded by Denmark from all sides. German Order dose not exist anymore. Estonia is Polish Latvia is Russian and Malme belongs to Denmark. Pskov is Russian ally. Crimea is surrounded from all sides by Poland. In this situation tsar can only attack me or Persia. Denmark is expanding in Scandinavia not Central Europe so is not a treat. Hungary has two choices for attack:poland or Turkey. If I were king of Hungary I would attack Poland which is Lutheran.

More Polish leaders in a new patch .. I've already sent them off to Greven, will include admirals, conquistadors and more minor leaders / generals. Should fix up that problem..

Yes, Lutheran. I did it so emigration will be greater. The conversion took from stability 6 points from+3 to -3. I have Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, Muslim and Reform. Catholic and Orthodox get 1/3 of the indicate and they are happy. Reform dose not get any tolerances and I have no problems. Muslim receives little less than Catholic and I have some rebellions in the southern part of the country. But I kill them of and resettle the territory with emigrants. That way Azov is now Lutheran. Also on 3 occasions a province changed religion from minor to mayor. . Lutheran indicator is on 3/4, I also have Marshals in every province to keep rebellions down

Pomerania Prince,
Excellent job holding it all together, with all those nations out for your head! :(
Looking forward to the next installment!

e.g. Krzysztof Arciszewski 1592-1656.

Born 9th December, 1592 in Rogalin, a member of an Arian magnate noble family.

1609-10, studied at the Academy in Rakowie

1616-17, studied in the University of Frankfurt.

1619, began working for Prince Radziwill

1621-22, took part in the war against Sweden in the Inflants.

1623, was expelled from the country for taking part in a murder

1624-25 took part in wars of the Dutch against the Spanish at Breda

1627-8, took the fortress controlled by the Hugenets in La Rochelle in France.

1629, battles against the Spanish

1630-33, battles against Portugal and Spain in Brazil. He was promoted to Major.

1633, returned to the Netherlands.

1634-37, came back to Brazil then came back to Amsterdam + wrote a book on artillery during this time. By this time he was well know and quite popular. Took the fortresses of Olinda and Recife in Brazil and the taking of the island of Itamarki. Promoted to Colonel. On his return he received a silver medalion for his successful campaigns, apparently the first time ever someone returning to the Netherlands was rewarded in this way.

1639, went to Brazil again as General of the Artillery and Admiral. COnflict with Jan Nassau, Dutch administrator in Brazil, returned back to Europe.

1646, returned to Poland-Lithuania, took command of the Royal Artillery, i.e. General of the Artillery.

1648-49, battles against the Cossacks during the rebellion / uprising

1650, retired from service

1656, died in Gdansk (Danzig) on the start of the Deluge.

He was the first Polish conquistador according to my sources. Happy? :)

Thanks! :) The only problem is: Should he really be added to the polish database? I mean at least as a conquistador he worked for the Dutch, right? And I thought leaders would and should be generally added to the files for the nations they worked for (e.g. Prince Eugen for Austria, von Steuben for U.S. etc.).
Now, Arciszewski surely is a somewhat special case, because from what You wrote I gather, that he worked for the Poles later (but not as a conquistador). Maybe he should be in the Dutch AND the Polish database but in the Dutch at an earlier and in the Polish at a later date? What do You think? :)

There were periods he worked for the Poles and periods he worked as a conquistador for the Dutch.

I guess it's fine for him to be in both databases, after all, we don't want him to follow one set path.

a) What if he stayed in the Netherlands the entire time after leaving Poland?

b) What if he never left Poland?

Taking both considerations ..
