Welcome to the 35th development diary for Europa Universalis IV. This time we look at the remaining powers in Scandinavia, and also take a deep look at the changes to siege.
Our goal in Scandinavia has been to emphasize the differences between Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and you will have three countries that play rather differently.

    Denmark
We have revised the map of Denmark rather heavily since EU3, giving them several new provinces, making them a formidable second rank power in Europe, and a fair amount of the time, becomes the winner in the north.

Denmark has a fair amount of historical events, including an eventchain for the Counts Feud, where you can select to back the monarch or a pretender.

Hello everyone! Heart of Darkness has now been out for a while so I thought it was time to do a post-mortem dev diary.

Reception of Victoria II: Heart of Darkness has been really good! Victoria II is one of our smaller franchises but, Heart of Darkness was our highest day one seller expansion ever which makes me really happy! It tells me that our hard work on having games polished and stable on release is working, and that people trust us and don't feel the need to wait for a patch worrying about bugs. Not to say we can't improve more, but I feel like we have come a really long way over the last 3 years. It also tells me that the Victoria fans are extremely loyal, its one of our games with one of the highest player retention rate (how many players of the original game stick around and buy expansions) and a really high average playtime that could put some MMOs to shame

Welcome to the 34th development diary. Today we'll talk about our changes to the unit interface, and also give you two small bonus snippets. This is a rather shot development diary, due to the fact of the holidays this week, and I got a lot off things to do today on Eu4.

    Changes to Unitview
First of all, we've taken a hard look at how to make the interface more streamlined and userfriendly.

The top part of the unitview, that is shown when you got multiple units selected, or while you are sieging or in combat, allows for instant interactability. You can easily see where your army is moving, its morale, leader and amount of troops. Here you can instantly split the unit in two, detach a force large enough to siege the current hostile fort, or load an army into a ship.

Welcome to the 33rd Development Diary for Europa Universalis IV, where we go into details about Ming China, the great dynasty that ruled over as much as a fifth of the world’s population in 1444, and dominated East Asian politics and diplomacy until the arrival of Western traders.

China is a country we tried to make interesting and unique in the Asian Dynasties expansion for Europa Universalis III, and we are keeping some elements of those changes. But we’ve refined them to, again, emphasize player choice and flexibility.

    China
The Ming Dynasty ruled China for about 300 years, from 1368 till the Manchu conquest in 1644 (founding the Qing Dynasty). The Ming have traditionally been held as one of the high points of China’s long history, Chinese art and literature flourished, the government reinvigorated the ancient system of civil service examinations to seek new talent and great trading voyages that drew tribute from as far away as Africa.

By the game’s start in 1444, however, these merchant adventures have stopped and China has turned inward. The scientific progress of the Song Dynasty has slowed, and the rise of an anti-trade faction of bureaucrats has weakened the power of the eunuchs that championed this expansion. As we will see later, managing these factions will be one of the great tests for you as a Chinese leader. ...

    Hello everybody.

My name is Davide Benedetti, I'm 22 years old and I live near the city of Ancona, situated on the Adriatic coast in central Italy. I should soon attain (hopefully) a bachelor's degree in the field of information and automation engineering.

My interests include playing sports, languages, history, politics, mathematics and programming - even though these last two don't seem to be very interested in me. I'm a pianist (I’ve been practicing for 10 years with varying degrees of success) and a lousy composer. I speak Italian, English, and some French and Spanish. I learned some bits of Latin and classical Greek in high school, now mostly forgotten. I'm currently trying to learn German. I'm mainly good at trying many things and not excelling at anything, I guess.

My role on the East vs West team is working at scenario Order Of Battle softcoding; that is setting up all the data that is necessary for the game's six starting dates including units, technologies, diplomatic relations, laws, and even country colors. Now you know whom to blame if France is not your favorite shade of blue.

This Development Diary, the last one before the release of Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods, will elaborate a bit on the new technology system we are introducing to the game. We are including it for free in a patch, so you'll be able to make use of it even if you don't own The Old Gods.

The original technology system in Crusader Kings II was not very rewarding or interactive, and thus the majority of people mostly or completely ignored it.

So since for The Old Gods we would need 200 more years of technological development we figured instead of trying to shoehorn that into the old system we could just as well throw most of it out and build something more interesting from the ground up.

Welcome to the 32nd Development Diary for Europa Universalis IV and this time we give you the juicy details about how to make the most fun aspect of the game more accessible to all players. And nothing is more fun than playing with your friends, and conquering their puny empires with mighty Ulm.

    New Network Code
The old network code that served our games for many years has been discarded. We are now running on Steamworks, and this gives us some advantages. For example, this code supports NAT punchthrough, so you no longer need to open ports to be able to play with your friends.

    Hotjoining
One major complaint we've had about the multiplayer experience in our previous games, is the hassle with having to rehost if someone loses their connection or wants to join the game at a later time. We have rewritten our network kengine from scratch and, if the host so desires, players can join a game already in progress through what we call hotjoin. That player will then connect, and get the savegame sent to him or her, allowing that player to join with minimal work, and with just a small pause for the rest of the players.

Welcome to the 31st Development Diary for Europa Universalis IV, and this week we talk about the nation of Japan and introduce the Scoring System we will be using in the game so that it is clear who has bragging rights once the game is over.

    Japan
Japan itself has been dramatically overhauled. We designed a new unique system for Japan in the Divine Wind expansion for EU3, but it never really worked well. We also learned quite a lot about designing for Japan while making Sengoku, and the development of Japan in EU4 has been based on that knowledge and many of the same alpha researches as we had for that game.

    Setup
We have also redone the map completely, with greater attention to the historical divisions of Japan. Japan is now about 28 provinces in EU4, with the provinces of Hokkaido and Sakhhalin uncolonized in the 1444 start date. These 28 provinces are divided among about twenty different Daimyos in Japan, including the famous ones like the Date, Tokugawa & Uesugi. ...

    The Beginning

We decided to leave out the barbecue jokes and get right to it, welcome to a new development diary for East vs West!

You can’t have a game about the Cold War without nuclear weapons lurking in the shadows, so adding a new nuclear engine to the Hearts of Iron formula, with a revamped graphical interface and AI was a challenge we happily took on. This, of course, raised a lot of questions from the beginning. How much do we need to focus on the nuclear parts? How much do the players want play with nuclear wars at all? How can we avoid too much micromanagement? How can we model missiles and launches? How should the AI use nuclear weapons, and how it will react to a nuclear war? Many issues, both technical and game-design related, are implied once you introduce superweapons.
We set out to establish a balance between creating a respectable nuclear engine without focusing too much on a game mode that will so drastically alter the world and the gameplay as soon as it’s used. The nuclear weapons should foremost be a means of last resort, a deterrent, a proper tool in a Cold War arsenal.

Hey folks, it is dev diary day and time to talk a bit about rebels and adventurers! Let's start off with the rebels; as you know, the old rebels are a nuisance but they are easily defeated and even if they hold a county for a long time, defection is rare. Sure, they sometimes kill a local ruler, but even that is uncommon. This is a shame, especially since we have explored better ways of handling rebels in the In Nomine expansion to Europa Universalis III and in Victoria II. So, for The Old Gods, we are replacing the old simplistic system with proper rebels with a cause (if you don't have the expansion, you will be stuck with the old system.) There are three new types of rebels: peasants, heretics and "liberators". As before, they can appear if the revolt risk is higher than 0 in a county. If the county is of a heretic religion, heretic rebels may appear. If the county is in a kingdom occupied by foreigners, liberators may rise up. If the other two types are not suitable, it's going to be a peasant revolt.

Hello, I'm Crusader Kings II developer Goosecreature. You may remember me from such Developer Diaries as "Events and Decisions" and "The Heathens are Coming." Today I'll be talking a bit about - you guessed it - the events and decisions of The Old Gods. This expansion will introduce many of these and not just for the Vikings.

As a Norse Pagan, you can hold a blot every nine years during winter. This is a good way of making your vassals like you more, and it is somewhat similar to a feast with one big difference – the human sacrifice. During a blot, four random prisoners will be brought up from your dungeon and you will have to decide whether or not to sacrifice them to the Allfather for prestige and piety. If you have no prisoners, some nameless thralls will be sacrificed instead but this won't bring you nearly as much renown. Anyone can be sacrificed, including close family members, but you will earn extra piety if your victim is a Christian or a Muslim. These are harsh times and the world is not a friendly place.

Welcome to the 29th Developer’s Diary for Europa Universalis IV, and this week we talk about the province interface and the changes we made to everybody’s favorite group of nations – the hordes.

    Province Interface
One of the goals we set for ourselves in Europa Universalis IV was to make the interface more sensible and the information easier to find. The Provincial interface is a good example of what we are trying to do throughout the game to make the experience smoother for both veterans of the series and rookies.

The main province tab has five different areas:

Loot and Pillage Your Way Across the Darkest Days of European History
Terror will follow in your bloody wake as you decimate and terrorize your way across Europe, all in the name of your heathen gods. Women will lament the slaughter of their men, children will sob for fathers never to return, but your gods will be pleased! This is the barbaric world of Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods, the fourth expansion for the universally acclaimed Crusader Kings II, releasing on May 28.
