Ok so i posted another thread about this a while back but i thought id give it another shot now when the forums have been updated. I have been working on collecting data on swedish tanks and tank projects from ww2 for WoT which is likely going to add them in by next year, and i thought it would be fun to share what we have found.

I hope that this information could potentially be used for some kind of expansion or DLC after the game is released.

Light tanks

Strv m/21-29
ZS6Ecz1.jpg

Originally a German ww1 tank design, 10 of these vehicles were imported under secrecy to Sweden for defending the government & royalty in case of a revolution. These tanks were the first armored vehicles used by Sweden and were used as training vehicles. To extend their service life the 5 most reliable tanks were upgraded in the early 30s to the Strv m/21-29 standard.

Strv fm/31
jXlX0hN.jpg

Built in 1934 the Strv fm/31 was a prototype wheel-cum-track tank design by the Landsverk company. It was built to compare the-wheel-cum-track design to conventional tracked designs, however upon its completion tracks and suspensions had improved substantially and the vehicle was declared obsolete. After this the Strv fm/31 served as a training vehicle with the Swedish army until 1940.

In 1934 Landsverk built three modern light tanks with the conventional track only suspension alongside one Strv fm/31 which had a wheel-cum-track suspension system. These tanks were extremly advanced for their day with welded sloped armor, radios and good optics, however they proved unreliable as they made extensive use of german parts and they were therefore used as training vehicles untill the end of ww2. The Strv m/31 actually has more armor than the Strv fm/31 but is also slower since it has to use its tracks.

Landsverk L-60
wOHb5eU.jpg

First built for the irish army in 1935 by Landsverk, this was the first tank to use torison bar suspension. The tank was a small 8 ton light tank armed with a 20mm autocannon, it was exported to several countries such as Austria, Ireland And Hungary where it was actually mass produced as the Toldi light tank. Later a redesigned version would enter service with the swedish army as the Strv m/38.

Landsverk L-120
uUf2B14.jpg

The Landsverk L-120 was a light tank design akin to the German Pz1 only weighing 4,5 tons. One prototype was produced for Swedish army trials in 1937. The L-120 was armed with a 6,5mm machinegun but was also offered with a 20mm autocannon. After the Swedish army trials the tank was rejected in favor of the Czech AH-IV tankette which became the Strv m/37, it was bought back by Landsverk and later sold to Norway. The modified L-120 known as Rikstanken was used by the Norwegian cavalry until the 1940 German invasion when it was captured and likely destroyed soon after.

Strv m/38
mfnhUhx.jpg

This tank was a development of the Landsverk L-60 tank originally developed for the Irish army in 1935. Swedish interest in the tank started in 1936 and it was soon decided that two Swedish prototypes called L-60-S should be made. Both were completed and tested by the swedish army and a order for 16 tanks including a prototype rebuilt to production standard were ordered in 1938.
The design was very modern at the time of the start of ww2 and featured torison bar suspension aswell as welded and to some degree sloped armor and a relatively powerfull engine. This coupled with a 37mm main gun and gave you a pretty mobile and small tank comparable to early Panzer 3's.

Strv m/39
strv_m39-5.JPG

When the contract for 20 more tanks of the L-60 type was given to landsverk in 1939 it was decided that a improved version with a new turret closer to the one used on the prototype would be ordered, this became the Strv m/39. The vehicle was generally unchanged but a extra machinegun was added to the turret front and the steering was changed from a steering wheel to levers, something which later was retrofitted on to the m/38 aswell. The tank entered production in 1939 but due to Bofors being unable to deliver the guns the 20 tanks were not ready untill 1941. The tank was also later given extra applique armor later during the war to give it around 50mm of frontal armor which was to resist 37mm shells.

Strv m/40L
strv_m40L-4.jpg

In 1940 it became clear that WW2 was in full swing and that the ordered TNH tanks from czechoslovakia would not be delivered and instead be used by the germans. This mean that Sweden was in desperate need of tanks and that they had to be built within the country. As no other company even built tanks Landsverk was given a order for 100 L-60 tanks. The design was changed yet again to be easier for mass production, these changes included a completely reworked engine bay and a new gearboxaswel as minor changes like the ability to mount a mortar on the rear engine deck. This version was also able to mount the applique armor, and a total of 100 were built between 1941 and 1942.

As landsverk moved on to building heavier tanks in 1943 production of the L-60 was given to Karlstad mekaniska verkstad. The version they built was based of the Strv m/40 but was longer, had a bigger engine and had all the applique armor built in from the start. However when the tank ntered production in 1943 it was already long since obsolete. A total of 80 tanks were produced between 1943 and 1944.

Developed in 1941 the Landsverk Terro (or L-60-IV) was basically a shorter Lago with a L-60 turret. The tank was offered to the swedish army in 1941 and 42 but became obsolete as the L-60 would be upgraded to the same armor level. Originally the tank was to be armed with a 37mm gun but later it was re designed with a 57mm gun.

Strv m/41
XiBbFCq.jpg

The Strv m/41 was a licenced tank design originating from czechoslovakia. In germany the tank originaly ordered by sweden became known as the Panzer 38(t) Aufs S and were used in their campaigns against france and russia. However in 1941 Sweden got the license to produce the tank and a soft steel prototype. Eventually production of the tank started in 1942 at Scania-Vabis and 116 tanks were produced untill 1943. After that production switched to an upgraded version with heavier armor (50mm compared to earlier models 25mm) and a bigger engine. Of the later type 104 were built.

In 1943 Scania-Vabis made two proposals for an improved version of the Strv m/41 with sloped armor and a 57mm gun. The proposals were based on studies of a captured T34 in finland and two versions were offered, one re using as many parts from the m/41 as possible to speed up the re tooling process and one with a larger hull and different suspension with a new 220hp Scania-Vabis engine. Later Bofors developed a new turret equipped with a 5 round autoloader for a longer 57mm gun, but the project never whent anywhere as the Strv m/41 production swithched to Sav m/43 in 1944.

Medium tanks

Landsverk Lago
9XxbcVP.jpg

Originally designed as a export tank the Landsverk Lago was a modern medium tank which had a prototype completed by 1941. The tank was a 18 ton design with 34mm of armor and a turret mounted 47 or 57mm gun. In 1941 the prototype that was being built for hungary was turned into the prototype for what would become the Strv m/42.

Strv m/42 "Delat torn"
pX0TLIq.jpg

In 1943 It was recognized that the Strv m/42 even though it had just entered production was not well armed enough to take on the new generation of Russian and german medium tanks, therefore the army command requested Bofors to start work on a new turret capable of taking the high velocity 75mm Pvkan m/43 gun. By 1944 bofors had completed drawings for the new turret which they called “Delat torn” because the gun divided the crew in the turret, this new turret also had a very unique feature which was a automatic loading system that could fire up to 3 rounds in quick succession before having to be reloaded. Work on a prototype for this turret began in 1945 and a full scale mock-up was also constructed. The prototype was completed late 1945 and was used in troop trials in 1946 where several problems were found with the design and it was discontinued.

Power to weight ratio: 17,4hp/t
Max speed: 45 km/h
Engine: Volvo V8B (410hp)

Landsverk Pricken
JyOTK1O.jpg

Starting development in 1943 the Pricken was supposed to be the Swedish answer to the T34 and the new generation of medium tanks. The Pricken was essentially an enlarged Strv m/42 with weigh 30 tons and feature 70mm thick sloped frontal armor. The tank was to be powered by a modified version of the Volvo A8B engine that was to produce 450 hp, whch would give the tank an acceptable power to weight ratio of 15 hp/t and a top speed of 50 kph. Drawings of the tanks major components such as the hull and two variations of the drivetrain layout was ready by 1944. However instead of building the new tank the resources went into the Pvkv m/43 tank destroyer which already had a prototype and was more or less ready for production. The armament of the Pricken was to be the 75mm Pvkan m/43 which also armed the Pvkv m/43, this gun was more or less equal in power to the german 75mm L/70 and would on the Pricken either be used in a conventional configuration or with a 3 round autoloader.
Currently we have only one drawing of the hull from the top, but you can clearly see that the design is basically that of an enlarged Strv m/42, and we also know that Landsverk did make a couple of concept drawings for a improved Strv m/42 with sloped armor which could be used to complete the Pricken.

Weight: 30 tonnes
Length: 6,3m
Width: 2,8m
Width with side skirts: 3m

Studebaker tracktor conversion
6xqPLti.jpg

in 1941 Sweden was in desperate need of armoured vehicles and therefore it was decided to test if the artillery tracktors could be converted into self propelled anti tank guns. This experiment resulted in a single vehicle being converted and tested. However it seems the tests were not sucessfull and this idea was discontinued.

Landsverk L-62
Finnish_AA_tank.jpg

First built in 1938 before the start of ww2, the L-62 "ANTI" was a self propelled anti aircraft gun based on a lengthened L-60 light tank chassis. Atleast 5 were made and several would later serve in Finland during the continuatiuon war. The vehicle also entered into licensed production in Hungary as the Nimrod. In 1941 the Swedish army concidered purchasing a up-armoured version of this vehicle as a dual purpose anti tank and anti aircraft vehicle, however the 40mm bofors gun was deemed to be ineffective against armor and it was decided that a dedicated tank destroyer would be developed instead

Stormpjäs fm/43

In 1943 bofors converted one of the Strv m/38 prototypes into a self propelled gun mounting the 7.5cm m/40 field gun and later the 7.5cm m/02 howitzer. Later this vehicle was tested with a 15cm recoilles rifle.

Pvkv m/43

6KHACHD.jpg

First built at the end of ww2, the Pvkv m/43 was a Tank destroyer based of the Strv m/42. The vehicle was actually prototyped in 1943 but didnt enter production untill 1945 due to gearbox problems. Overall the vehicle was very comparible with german late model Stug's.

Armament: 75mm L/54 pvkan m/43
Crew: 4
Weight: 23 ton
Lenght: 6.220mm (7.460mm including gun)

Motorlavett m/42
5O1jCkK.jpg

In 1944 the swedish army expressed the need for a heavier tank destroyer capable of taking out heavy tanks. The project was never actually drawn up, but would later lead to a series of 30 ton tank destoryer projects. The vehicle was described as a Strv m/42 chassis rebuilt with a rear mounted superstructure in the same way the Sav fm/44 was rebuilt. The main armament would be a Bofors 10,5cm m/42 anti aircraft gun, which would have given the TD the capacity to knock out anything on the battle field during ww2.

The picture above is my interpretation of how this vehicle might have looked based on the Strv m/42 and Pvkv m/43

So has wargaming contacted you about this? I would enjoy these tanks being in WoT. If it was added into HOI4 however i think they would have to add some more nations to make it worthwhile.

Ive been in contact with wargaming for a while, and its more or less confirmed that they are planning to introduce the first swedish branch next year. Ive done a article on how its most likely going to look here

Wow thanks for the brief history on Swedish tanks. I think this was awesome information. I also find it interesting how until late in the war that the tanks have a very German look, but change later on. The Sav m/43 in 1944 looks more like a Soviet design to me.

Very interesting. Apparently there was quite a bit of active cooperation between Sweden and Hungary in terms of development of these designs, because I see several changes which were listed that were made to the Swedish tanks, then the Hungarian licensed models, and other cases where Hungary made changes or variants and Sweden incorporated them into their next design or major refit. Hungary apparently did most of the field-testing and field upgrades/refits as needed, while Sweden did most of the underlying engineering.

Sweden before Italy? Quality over quantity, apparently <joking, mostly>.

People use what´s near them as inspiration so no wonder they used german and soviet designs as basis. Smarter than using french or brits, too.

First off Sweden actually has way more original tanks and tank designs than italy which is why it will be added before anything italian.

2nd Landsverk which was the Company behind most of the designs above did most of the design work for both the Swedish and early Hungarian version of the L-60. We even have a original drawing for a hungarian L-60 turret with a hungarian 40mm gun sut i would not say that Hungary had any real influence over any swedish design.

As for tank design, Swedish tank design is based on german ideas. Landsverk was purchased by the germans and used as a way to circumvent the versailles treaty. Basically they continued tank development there but due to swedish limitations their tank designes branched off from german tank design to create something new.
