I am a staunch believer that the pipedream of Vindogradism has no place in these United States.

To All Running:
Do you plan to expand the American sphere of influence? If so, how and where?
Would you consider the expansion of the United States proper into the Caribbean and Pacific?
Would you consider the expansion of the United States proper into Central and South America?
What do you feel the best way to react to the emergence of the ASDL Party?

1.) I will continue to enforce the Monroe Doctrine by placing the Caribbean and South American nations into our Sphere of Influence. I shall also continue to move our interests into the Pacific and look to bring closer relations to the Island nation of Japan, as well as colonizing the unclaimed islands within the Pacific.
2.) Into the Pacific, yes. Into the Caribbean, maybe. If we do go to war with Spain, I would seek to have elections held within Cuba and any other territory we free from Spain, to ensure that the local inhabitants choose whether they wish to be a part of our great nation.
3.) The Central and South American nations are our allies and we will seek to ensure their independence is maintained, unless radical governments are put in place which oppress their own people, in which case Congress and our own People will decide our course of action.
4.) I would seek to remove the illegal ban on the ASDL Party, but also ensure that demonstrations by both sides remain civil and that any radical talk for revolution are unheard in our streets. We are a democracy, and we will never have to resort to a revolution.

Like Mr Wilkinson, I too would expand our education, but I would like to say something about my failure to uphold my policies of rebuilding the South. I have done the best that any man could have done given the situation. It is hard to bring peace and reconstruction to a war torn nation when the people we have liberated from rebels continue to defy us at every chance they get. I did not wish to use federal troops to restore order, but I had to inorder to prevent another rebellion and war, while the current war was still being mopped up. With the war finally over and peace finally starting to return, we may finally be able to bring in more lenient reconstruction policies. But the one things hindering us, is the rise of the KKK. If elected, I would establish a Federal Bureau of Investigation to combat the rise of this organization and prevent more people, both African-American and White, from being harmed. This should also allow Federal Troops to finally be withdrawn from the South and placed into their peace-time garrison duties and rotations.

As for Cuba, we must not give up on peaceful diplomatic talk with the Spanish. War should only be a last resort, and I would use it as such. But if war does come, I intend to use all the force we can muster to show the world that we will not allow fugitives from justice to escape into foreign territory. The United States of America is not weak, and I will ensure that it is not perceived as such.

With the emergence of a United Socialist Front, I would seek to undoe the illegal acts of President Williams and lift the ban on their parties and gatherings. This is America, and we have the freedom to support any political belief that we believe to be right. But, I will not let talk to revolution to be brought into the public ear. When the ban if lifted, it will be done so with the understanding of the Socialist leadership, that any talk of revolution be forbidden, they will run their candidates like everyother party, not seek to topple the current government.

I will continue to seek the Health Care reform that President Williams had sought to achieve his term. We must improve the living conditions of our people, and seek to improve safety in our factories and cities. I would also seek to bring about a shorter workday for the common man, allowing him to spend more time with his family, and purchase some of the new everday items available for all in our nation.

((@ King))

But you cannot limit radical talks to that it is not heard on the streets. This would go against our founding principles of freedom which include freedom of speech of which radical talk is acceptable. However should these talks then turn violent it is then the goverments duty to arrest the speakers for inciting violence as our constituion only allows free speech, demonstrations, protests, etc as long as they do not incite violence.

But was not talk of succession by the SNM prior to its own Civil War, with Khur and Davis fighting against the seccionists together, forbidden and thus illegal by your statement?

The action os seccession is illegal. But the talk of it is not as it is allowed in the constitution. I will not ban talk even of illegal actions as it would be contradictory to our constituion and believes, even if I thought such talk was wholesale wrong. This would also begin to set us upon a road to becoming a oppressive goverment if we make any talk illegal be is secession or revolution. However once they incite violence they outside of the constituion and only can one act to arrest those who incited the violence. But never restrict their right to speak.

Boston will never vote for a revolutionary after a war. You seem out of touch with the average Boston worker and politics on a whole. Your ideas will only get the support of a few. What experience does a fisherman have In politics?

My workers are treated well as it is and I know I have their support. I am setting up the Howard Industries trade union. It will give the employees of Howard industries a greater say in the running of the company. I am also initialising a profit sharing system. 25% of all company profits will be divide among the workers.

If you become mayor, I will not let you near my business. I may even have to call a strike in my own company if you try to intervene.

((No disrespect, but your obsession with us - and that of the IC government - seems a bit ridiculous and out of place. No one cared the tiniest bit about Marxists or Anarchists until after the Paris Commune showed what workers' revolution can do. Frankly, all the histrionics are getting a bit tired and highly unrealistic. BBB banned us from the only viable electoral platform we had, I think the politicians can safely ignore the actions of any and all socialists barring industrial action.))

Senator,

You statement shows your class bias and your disconnection from the people of your state. The workers, who run society each day and who's labor is exploited for the profit of the few ruling elites, know exactly how society runs and could manage industry and society much more efficiently and effectively than the current ruling class. Furthermore, my experience in "politics" - or at least what you would deign to refer to as "politics" - is marginal at best; this is mostly due to the fact that I have only ever been on the receiving end of electoral promises and campaigns and have only ever been conned out of my vote by every politician who ever lived. If the elected politicians were men who are true to their word, cared about their constituents, and understood the daily life of the average worker, then our society would be much the better for it and be more advanced than any other on earth. As it is, the pomp-and-circumstance surrounding our "republic" only partly conceals the nepotism, oligarchy, and corruption which pervade our society and "politics". I do not wish to be Mayor so that I may be involved in "politics", but so that I can actually accomplish that which would benefit this city's vast majority; the impoverished working class.

Respectfully,

Joseph Hayden

Should I be elected Mayor of Boston I pledge to:
  • Work for an Eight-Hour work-day
  • Establish laws with severe penalties for those who commit, or conspire to commit, the crime of depriving a person of their lawful right to vote
  • Create a Department of Labor Standards to enforce Federal Safety Regulations
  • Create a Laborer's Benevolent Society to provide assistance in times of need to injured workers or the families of deceased workers
  • Demand a minimum wage for all workers in the City of Boston
  • Fight for tenant reform and the end to slums by creating housing standards
  • Build relationships with foreign cities to promote Boston as a Port-of-Call and destination for investment and trade

My obsession is that you are running for mayor in my hometown, a city which I want see in good and capable hands. You speak like us factory owners are the slavedrivers. The fact is that about half of your pledges are already being carried out and the workers are being treated well. Just because it isn't law doesn't mean it's not occurring. Obviously more can be done but progress takes time. However these other pledges you are proposing will simply make Boston uncompetitive, compared with the rest of the country. Factoies will leave the city in droves. Your pledges would have to be introduced on a national level to have any benificial effect.

I can also guarantee you that I care about my constituents. My workers are not "exploited for profit". They will be getting part of the profit. This motivates my employees, which helps production and also helps the workers.

Okay. Here's the low-down:

Misters Howard and Hayden are going to lay off each other.
The ASDLP, being a political party started without my endorsement, and more importantly just a continuation of banned parties, is hereby derased from the record as an official party.
The ASDLP is an underground movement that has simply named itself as if it were a party. That is what it shall stay as.
Mr. Hayden would thus be running as an independent or Libertarian.

Furthermore, there is no election for mayor ongoing, as that would be an election outside of the thread conventions and rules.
The holder of the position of Mayor of Boston will be decided by me if I mention the city's mayor in an update.

And yes, women's suffrage has been reality since the first term of the late John F. Cameron.

PS. We need a Republican Candidate or two!

I will proudly run as the Republican candidate:

The South: Continued Radical Reconstruction until all states adapt constitutions in accordance with The Constitution of the US in regards to rights for minorities and outlawing slavery. Loyalty checks, and banning of antebellum politicians will continue, but other than that "occupation" will only last until a new drafted document. After that, the people of the states will be back in control. Of course, this would be up to the Secretary of Reconstruction to decide.

Economy: Laissez Faire/ slight intervention. We must capitalize on these new gains in industry still ocuring after the war. Let capitalists expand to the clouds, but let us be prepared to help out industry important to the US government. I am not for these new demands by the so called socialists and vinogradists demanding workers rights. I feel that they infringe upon the success of industry, which will make us strong. I am not however against the forming of unions for workers to look for benefits in their local employment, and so they should do that if there are problems. I am also not against the rights of industry to protect their interest, and any strike which will bring industry and business to a halt will be dealt with severely if compromise cannot be achieved.

Religion: (irrelevant... Pluralism... Not sure thats important)

Spain, the Caribbean: The US is still recovering from the most devastating of wars. I would not think of invading Spain during my presidency, at least not in the first term. Our own populace takes precedence over the peoples of the Caribbean, and we are still recovering. We could help to sow the seeds of revolution, but nothing more

Military: Expanding of standing military and navy, we must be prepared to flaunt our power post war and expand once we are healed.

Citizenship: Free Citizenship, let all the huddled masses stream to our borders. Let them fuel our industries and demand.

The West: Expand statehood of territories in the West, and continue the process of handing out land to be settled by Americans hoping to go out west.

Republicans are the party of America. We have brought this country through civil war intact, and will continue to remain strong.

This reminds me of some of the things I support:
- The universal right of working people to unionize and for those unions to to have the right to collectively bargain with management.

Collective bargaining is the most important thing for the labor movement to achieve its goals. Social reforms are the goals themselves.

I also believe unions should be kept free - the government doesn't get to decide whether or not a man is allowed to go into business, there are specific licenses such as that to sell liquor or run a restaurant, and as there should be safety regulations and boards that determine whether the construction job done by one of our unions and their employers was up to safety codes; but in general corporations are independent entities that are not considered to be "allowed" to exist by the government; so trade unions should be no different. With that in mind I do not believe that allowing the Department of Interior broad power to declare a trade union illegitimate or only recognize a certain trade union for a certain trade in a given area is the right thing to do - you could create a system of coercion, corruption, bribery and kickbacks. (( Think in real life, in China they basically choose which of the various trade unions or private companies that exist in a given province for a certain field they are going to allow to exist, creating a monopoly derived from the state refusing to recognize any of the competitors. That kind of thing is a problem that could happen with that sort of rigid centralized registration system you are proposing. ))

I see that one canidate proposes to expand the military (Zagoroth). What would you be doing for the Navy and the Marine Corps.

And Colonel Callhan were would these Marine Expeditionary forces be place as well as their areas of operation?

I'd have to agree. The Unions should be free. Callahan's idea would lead to government control of organized labor, and that doesn't smell like a democratic and free society.

To Colonel Turner:

As I said the Navy would be expanded. (As for the marines... sure?) All parts of the military should be expanded for future events.

(I always seem to get this, but my platform and announcement ended up as the last post on a page. So... Pg 181, last post if BBB/ anyone needs to see it).

I find myself in the same situation Colonel. The young men serving our nation, such as you and I, will have our chance to run in due time. For now, we must strive to serve as best that we can.

I find myself disturbed by Mister Bachmann's hesitance to even consider direct military action against the Spanish and their colonies. It should not be our first option, as Mister Jamous has insisted, but it should still remain an option if no progress is made through diplomatic channels. If there is no Republican willing to take the tough stance necessary to protect American dignity, I feel that I must look elsewhere for a worthy candidate to give my support to.
