well, i'am also experiencing the crash bug, when changing desktop, but only when i run it in openbox, but when running it in gnome there is no problems....but in gnome i am just having a virtual desktops setup (compiz), so it might have something to do with the way "proper" desktops and processes are handled as opposed to virtual desktops.But i am having a Nvidia card(9300m). But as long as i know about and it is running stable otherwise im ok with it :)

Still having problems to get hoi3 started. :(

I'm using the newest (.29) version of wine on my Ubuntu. The installation went fine. I did it just like irrlicht mentioned. Installed framework etc. afterwards - no problems so far. But when I try to start the game, I just see a new tab on the bottom bar with a little hoi3 icon. For 3 or 4 seconds I see my hdd light "working", but then it stops. And then it takes like 10 seconds for the tab to disappear. :mad:

No error message, no popup whatsoever. I tried the updates, but the result is the same. I even uninstalled it and did everything again (since I guessed that I must have done something wrong), but that was nothing but a was waste of time. :(

Any got a clue how I could fix that? (or how to find the source of this blasphemic error:mad:)

Edit: this happens, when I start the game via the wine menu. When I manually start the hoi3.exe nothing happens (not even the little tab with the icon) and hoi3game.exe just tells me, that a critical error occured which has either been produced by wine or by the game. Can't find any further details.
 
Landstreicher, in order to sort your case out, we'd need some error output. This can be achieved by launching wine in command line.

On a standard wine and HOI3 installation :
cd "$HOME/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron III"; wine hoi3game.exe
or
env "WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine" wine "c:\\Program Files\\Paradox Interactive\\Hearts of Iron III\\hoi3game.exe"

You can redirect output from the terminal to a log file adding « > $HOME/hoi3.log 2>&1 » to the above command line. This create a file named hoi3.log in your home directory.

We'll check this in order to help you.

Well thanks to that log we can now help you.

HOI3 crashes as it called a non implemented method from direct3d : D3DXCreateEffectPool. I can see that you are using Nvidia component.

Can you please tell me what is the winetricks package you used for direct 3d ? There are two of them available :
  • d3dx9 : MS d3dx9_??.dll
  • directx9 : MS DirectX 9 user redistributable

Winetricks recommends d3dx9, but my experience is that HOI3 don't run on those components.
I can read "d3dx9_36.dll" reference, so it is very likely you don't have the proper directX implementation installed. Try installing "directx9" over the "d3dx9" this worked on my system but this is rather dirty. On the other hand you could reinstall on a fresh wine prefix.

Other possibilities are the nvidia drivers, but we'll give a shot after testing the direct X thingy.
 
I tried "directx9" first - as Irrlicht said - but this caused what I just mentioned. I reinstalled it, but the result was of course the same. Then I tried the d3dx9 and HoI3 started, but I had several problems. I couldn't see any images, so I choose a country on the map and saw its name. Then I clicked on start, HoI3 began to load and it crashed. Some directx buffer overflow. I started the game again and this time it crashed right after I tried to move the mentioned map. (pointing the mouse to the edge of the screen) :(

Well, yeah, I might deinstall WINE and try it all over again.
 
Sorry about the slight off-topic here but has anyone successfully run HOI3 on a macbook pro using Wine or any of its derivatives (crossover pro, crossover games)? I am getting an error at runtime that says the game requires Pixel Shader 2.0.

This looks very complicated and makes me reconsider whether switching to Linux is really worthwhile...Irrlicht's guide is excellent but makes me wonder what it'd be like for other games!

However, I use Linux exclusively on my laptop. I don't see the point using Windows when I can get better programming environments and much better desktop under Linux. Moreover, all our uni projects are assessed on Unix, so why would I do them on Windows and spend time making them compatible with Unix? Plus, Windows can't run bash scripts!

If you are not like me, don't be bothered switching to Linux, unless you've got a lot of time to burn. Effort you spend on making games work on Linux won't be worth it. You won't gain anything.

yeah, you dont switch to linux if your primary use is going to be to play games, its not worth the hassle. another reason not to switch is if you require good graphics programs like photoshop. For everything else I think linux offers a better alternative than windows, especially for programming as long as you dont want to use directx. imho of course.

Segmentation fault

So, for "OffscreenRenderingMode" I had tried fbo, pbuffer, and backbuffer, with all three options leading to failure--I am assuming as this issue was brought up in post #24 and adhered to within post #40. My question, what exactly does this mean and how does one go about fixing the issue? (I'm really loving running this through Linux as the main load screen flies by, while in windows it takes about 3 minutes.)

The thing that jumps out for me is that there's a newer version of the nvidia drivers, you could try that for starters.

There is a discrepancy as compared to my previous error message outputs: the music continues to play and the error message--from the terminal window--does not list "Segmentation Fault" as the last line of the output.

I thank everybody for their assistance with this issue. It is pushing me to become a better linux user--but I'm beginning to feel the itching sensation that materializes when one ceases all strategic gaming (I ditched windows, so linux is my only hope).

I'm still curious as to what the output means...
