Just downloaded the other day and so far I'm enjoying the game. I have two questions so far. What do you like for temples? I only have tried one to Dauros because paladins were about unkillable in Majesty, though they still seem tough in MoA but they are slow.

2nd question; are cities with a lot of sea zones a waste? My first game my capital is on a peninsula and I have a lot of sea and not a lot of space to build. I haven't noticed but it doesn't appear to be beneficial. (Not talking the coastline where you can build a harbor but the actual sea that falls in your city limits.)

Suggestion for spell battles

Currently there is no mechanic to protect spells from being dispelled or for a contest between great mages. You simply cast dispell or counterspell and you will succeed which makes the Unity spell rather useless as you have no way to ensure its casting.
For now that is not that much of a problem because of the lacking AI, but in the case the AI gets improved or that there will be a multiplayer mode this will cause problems.

Another problem is that you most of the time end up with too much mana as your casting speed is so slow that you can only cast one spell each turn and are unable to use your mana even if you wanted to. This of course can be resolved by increasing mana costs for spells or increase the casting time but I propose a different solution for both of this problems

*Spell battles*

I admit, the name might be a bit misleading. Rather than actual battles there would be new spells which allow you to errect shields which protect your spells, enchantments or even an area from enemy spells.
Suggestion (flavor based, not balanced):
* Spell Mantle - Protects the Enchantments of a Unit
* Area Ward - Protects an area with a 5 hex diameter from enemy spells
* Spell Shield Dome - Protects a cities enchantments and the unit stationed in it from dispells and enemy spells
* Realm Ward - All of your realm are protected from enemy spells
* Global Shield - Protects your global enchantments
* Secure casting - Prevents your casted spell from being counterspelled

This spells allow you to spend additional mana at the time of casting in addition to their normal mana costs. The additional mana is your actual shield. The more mana you spend, the longer does the spell take to cast.
The additional mana spend is your shield. Whenever an enemy tries to dispell one of your enchantments, counter your spell or cast into a warded area he too has to spend additional mana besides the casting cost of his spell. If he spends more mana than the mana spend on the shield, the shield is shattered and the spell goes off like normal. The attacker of course looses all mana he bid and does not get a return for the amount spend too much.
If he spends less mana than what is in the shield his spell fails. But the shield is damaged as well. If looses mana equal to what the attacker used or a fraction of it is up to debate and has to be balanced with a casting speed. Imo it should be very inefficient to cast a cheap spell over and over again while always bidding a low mana amount to slowly whittle the shield away.

Now the shield itself is not stable and looses mana automatically over time. This is done so that people can't simply set up huge shields during peace time which are practically impenetrable by the enemy. How fast the shield looses power is also up to debate.
Also, you can't "stock up" a already casted shield. Instead you have to create a completely new shield which, if applicable, replaces your old one.

The enemy can see if a area, unit or enchantment is protected by a spell shield, but not how strong it is. Maybe he gets a very general idea but a lot of guessing should be involved.
This also allows for new perks in the game. For example (numbers arbitrarily made up by me. Have to be balanced by professionals):
* Shield master - ThHe strength of your spell shields is 1.2 times the mana spend during casting
* Shieldbreaker - Your spells penetrate shields 1.2 times as well
* Spell spy - You get more exact information about the strength of enemy spell shields

Of course when implementing this mechanic the mana gain of the races has to be normalized as Undead have a huge advantage in mana production.
The effect of this change is that you can't dispell a other mages spells automatically and that mana managment becomes a lot more important as in war a high mana pool is still a advantage even if you can't use it up the normal way because of the slow casting speed.

In one of my games, the AI emperor had the kings of France, Hungary and Bulgaria as his vassals. Everything was fine, until after a while I checked the direct vassal map and I couldn't find the kingdoms anymore. So I first looked whether the kingdoms had rulers and they didn't. In fact, the kingdoms did not exist anymore. Then I checked the history of the kingdoms and saw that all former kings were now landless courtiers and they all had a -80 opinion penalty towards the emperor for revoking their titles. However, how is it possible for the emperor to destroy the kingdoms after he revokes them? Is this WAD or just a bug?

As King of England (and what might have been Wales) I thought I had figured out how to gain territory by pressing claims. I snapped up the Duchy of Gwynedd for a family member, and took the Duchy of Lothian for a newly minted Count. Grabbing multiple counties is soooo much better than onesies!

Then I saw an opportunity to grab the Duchy of Connaught for the ruling Countess of Winchester, from an excommunicated Duke of Meath.

When all was said and done, instead of seeing Connaught and Bresne change to my colors, they remained Irish, and my vassal the wench of Winchester became independent, taking MY county of Winchester with her. How does that work? I should have made a screen print, a little bittie green county in the middle of England (the island, half of Scotland, Normandy and Brittany.)

Why didn't this work like the Lothian Usurpation? I thought maybe Crown Laws, but Ireland has no King (and on that note, will I be stung again by not having Celtic culture, hence unable to create King of Eire despite owning 100% of it's hearts and minds?)

I've made the mistake of making a vassal King, thinking I'd be his liege (sorry Castille!). I've made the mistake of pushing claims for unlanded vassals, thinking I'd get the territory. Now I've made the mistake of giving away territory by pushing a claim for another. I just don't know why.

I posted this in the quick answers thread but I think it needs its own thread since it really isn't a quick answer, so sorry if this is unnecessary. I am new this game and this the farthest I have gone in a Vicky 2 game so far so I have a lot of questions. Most of what I accomplished so far was learning through reading threads here and trial and error with game. Here is the situation:

I managed to form Germany with Luxembourg and Bohemia after my war with Austria in 1855. I nearly lost it though two years laters in a 3 front war with France+Spherelings+Russia vs. Pretty much me and Two Sicilies but I managed to hold on and free some of Poland from Russia. I had +4 attack general that I patroled around with and decimated armies with.

Anyways what do you think of my future plans. I want to finish off Austria-Hungary and free Hungary and also gain Moravia for myself. And of course I want to colonize Africa near in the east. Then I want to rob the Dutch of their Pacific colonies. And the last thing I can think of is free the rest of Poland from Russia. I don't want to annex Austria and form Greater Germany. Is there anything else I should aim for? And what should I do about infamy? With my growing economy and current SOI I am catching up to the UK pretty quickly.

One last question: Is there anyway I can assist in helping to form Italy? I have TS in my sphere but the region hasn't changed one bit.

Munster defeats Meathy (or whatever) and only peace option is for Meathy to withdraw claim on Ormand. But other Duke is toast and has lost everything. But I guess I have to now declare war against him to actually take those lands???
In other words, are the peace options totally constrained by the terms of the character declaring the war?

Game is driving me bloody nuts with its obfuscation. I also get a button telling me I can usurp Leinster, but when I start trying, nothing happens and no names shwo up to usurp jack. So can I do it or not? And *how* do I do it?

Aaarrggghhhhh!!!!!

Since I'm in moaning mode, one last gripe. Parafdox, it's been over a decade, can you please finally learn to stop having the AI retreat to vcictory please? It's always the worst thing about your games. Every one of your games. A rout is a rout is a rout. It's not a license to strike even deeper behind the lines of the enemy that just handed you your tail. Have you guys ever heard of "passage of lines"? Ever? /rant

Ever? /rant

Pulleys and Levers, and Looming

I find it to be just a bit expensive and difficult to access. For a budding farmer who has almost a box of yellow-stained cotton, naturally this is a big problem.

I've taken, instead, to research bakery so I can get rid of some of my ears of grain and grain seeds. I am doing that because I am finding a lot more "sugar and spice" and "arts and crafts" and "pots and pans" inspirationals. I have difficulty finding a lot of good law and lore, and especially natural and perennial philosophy curios, thus I've delayed pulleys and levers.

Anyway, my questions are these: did you 1) intend for farming to produce so many things we will not be able to use until we research bakery/looming/etc, 2) intend for us to seek baking before looming, and crafting skills (like these) rather than fencing and firearms (as cloak and dagger curios are also difficult to come by, too)?

Hola.
