Dev Diary #114 - Wonderful Upgrades

Hello!

Today we will be presenting some of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder. Each stage of your Wonder will unlock upgrade slots, which will allow you to build Upgrades. Upgrades have their own triggers, meaning that in some cases you may need to fulfill other requirements in order to to unlock them. Not every Wonder needs a Lighthouse Custodian, and not every character would know how to grow poisonous herbs.

Each Wonder has access to Upgrades that are shared with other Wonders, as well as unique ones. Here are some examples:

One of the Upgrades you can add to your Wonder is ‘Spikes’. This is a generic Upgrade, meaning you can build it on any Wonder. As well as increasing the Siege Defence of holdings in the province, this Upgrade allows you to try to use a new decision, Intimidate, on other characters every now and then.

Other Upgrades are more tailored for the Wonder at hand, such as the Trap Door, and the Royal Bedchamber, available for the Royal Palace.

Another upgrade you can add is the Armory. This is a unique upgrade that can be built on the Great Fortress. It unlocks special options in the weapon smiths chain, as can be seen below.

With the Armory, your own smiths can actually give you a decent weapon. You can even ask for the specially heavy Zweihander Sword.

Other Upgrades will unlock minor titles, like the Custodian of the Stone, any guesses as to what type of wonder this is built on?

And finally, some will need to be tried out.

Thank you for your time!

Perhaps there can be a "Temple Mount", unique wonder with various existing structures as upgrades?

Just like someone suggested for Constantinople and Rome...

I have to agree with some previous forum goers in voicing my concern over this new system. Having "Fortresses", "Cathedrals" or "Universities" as wonders is (to me) inherently turning the title "wonder" into something common and everyday. If Paradox instead directed the wonders towards actual architectural (possible geographical?) unique achievements, I would approve. If we must have such things, they should instead be incorporated into the already existing building tree in the regular holdings. Do the Castles in Prague, truly earn the title of Fortress? If the player directs their wealth and fortune into it, perhaps specializing into unique styles of siegecraft. Or perhaps the Bishoprics of Rome have expanded their wealth and prestige by growing into massive flying cathedrals? The point being, the system we currently have already leads to players investing in their capitals, therefore the new system should be allowing for customization and specialty.

Lastly, any wonder should at least be something that is of great achievement. Rebuilding the Colossus, constructing massive aqueducts, or even as simple as carving giant statues out of the mountains.

I disagree; the major cathedrals, for instance, took literally centuries to build. They were also immensely expensive, taking a huge portion of a nation's income to build (and incentivizing things like stealing/fabricating relics and saint's legends to attract pilgrims). They weren't just "big churches that developed over time"; they were intentionally built with the understanding that it would take that long and be that expensive. That was a major aspect of the Middle Ages that is currently lacking in the game; the generic "build a church holding" aspect really doesn't cover it.

I always thought it would be pretty cool if a new minor holding was created for holy order chapters. It would allow Templars to become more widespread throughout Europe, without sacrificing individual baronies. The same could even be done with the Hashashin

I'd like this if only because for once maybe the germanic holy order will form instead of the NPC either maxing the holdings or straight up refusing them a slot

I'm sure you can mod this in if you really want it :D

Alternatively if you find me a good reference for a medieval pyramid slide I will add it myself!
Really? o_O
Let's make a deal: Show us an example for a medieval pyramid, and we show you an example for a giant medieval pyramid slide.
Ooooooor, let's just agree, that if we have fantasy medieval pyramids, they can as well have slides... :p

Medieval slides cannot exist as the first recorded slide was in the early 20th century either in New York playgrounds or Coney Island so RIP Lunacy.

Also something I think that would be really cool would be if the bloodlines interacted with the wonders, either through adding new options for slots (Crusaders getting some special crusade fortress) or gaining more slots (Castellan giving more slots for fortresses) I think that it would mesh really well and add a bunch of new reasons to try and get crafted bloodlines.

Have we had a release date suggested for this patch? (Looking forward to it but also want to finish my current campaign.)

You know, it would be nice flavor for finnish characters if there would be a sauna upgrade for palaces. It could give a small boost to health (+0.5 or +1.0) and a bit of monthly prestige (like 0.5 at most) and maybe even piety if character is suomenusko.

Will I need “lustful” for the stripper pole upgrade to the Royal Bedroom? Or will the seduction focus suffice?

I want to build a murder castle!
