Dev Diary #113 - Wonderful Views

Hello!

It was really great reading all your comments and questions last week, lots of fun ideas. This week we will be looking a bit more in depth at the wonder view. Which you can see below.

The wonder view. Please note that art is Work in progress and may change!

Firstly, we have the name of the wonder. This will change dynamically based on where it is built, and what upgrades it has. For example you might build ‘The Cathedral of Stockholm’. Then, after building the Spikes upgrade, this may become ‘The Bloody Cathedral of Stockholm’. We also have a dynamic description that works just like the naming system, but more detailed.

There is also an image of the wonder, which is dynamic to an extent as well. The background depends on where you are in the world (Desert, Jungle, Snow etc) and the depiction of the wonder changes depending on the stage, going from being in construction to highly decorated or even in ruins.

Now, below this we have the modifier box, where you can find all the modifiers provided by the wonder. Some of these are granted by the wonder itself and some are granted by upgrades, but they are all listed here. These modifiers can either affect the top liege, or the province the wonder is in.

Below this we have the progress bar, which will show your progress when upgrading to a new stage of your wonder.

Lastly, we have the upgrade view which is split into two tabs, completed, and available. In the ‘completed’ tab you can see a breakdown of the upgrades you have built and their effects, and in the ‘available’ tab you can see all the upgrades you are able to build.

let us know, your questions and comments and we will do our best to answer them!

Also as a note, a lot of people have predicted that the ancient Egyptian Religion will be making a return. I can confirm that the Egyptian Religion will NOT be in this upcoming patch. That doesn’t mean we are against it in the future though….

Reactions:
You can build a wonder in every province unless it already has a wonder. These will be generic. Some historical wonders will already exist though.
Would it be possible to have specific events related to wonders change ?
I take my previous example of the Pagan Wall :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Sainte-Odile
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mur_païen_du_mont_Sainte-Odile

A important pilgrimage site was constructed on the same mount, but the Wall itself is older (the exact construction period is unknown) and has been reinforced multiple time (IV°, VII°, X° centuries). So, perhaps events for modifying preexisting wonders (with cultural or faith conditions) ?

There are a lot of great suggestions in this thread, but I'm afraid that many of them exceed the scope of a free patch.

Maybe consider an additional small DLC to cover some costs and implement just the (moddable) groundwork in the free patch.
I'd rather pay a small fee for a proper implementation of wonders which were an important part in the time period instead of a rather lackluster feature which could have been much more. Nevertheless the feature should not be behind a pay wall.

The idea is great and it's amazing that you even consider it as free content, but I'm not done yet with CK2 and want much more :D

So yeah this caught my attention because wonders have always been my favorite things to build in all games (Back from my first game of Civ IV in 2005 to my recent crippling addiction of Stellaris (screw you btw Paradox. How dare you make at least 3 games that get you playing for thousands of hours each, its not right )

Something I would like to see is giving certain wonders that pushing forward odd play styles and promote things not seen before in CK2. Some examples include

Papal Gift (like the Pope Chair): Grants extra morale based on moral authority (promoting the ruler to focus heavily on improving relations with the Pope and stamping out antipopes)

Alamut: Grants bonuses to plot power and assassination chance based on moral authority (the sister to the Papal Gift but with a different flavor to create a religious assassin game)

Petra: Grants a bonus that increases monthly prosperity gain on all desert and desert mountain holdings (promoting the ruler to stay in the desert and to keep their land war free, by trying to extend into the non-desert lands can risk losing prosperity by a war going south and having their lands razed)

Royal Complex (Basically just Versailles): Decreases demesne limit drastically but grants technological spread and income in your demesne. This wonder can build city buildings but does not count towards demesne limit (Essentially promoting very decentralized play)

Marshals Complex: Decreases vassal levies by 50%, for every 2-4 soldiers you would lose from this gain 1 point of retinue units (early professional armies essentially)

Something else I kind of want to see is promoting the bloodlines that grant buildings with actual wonders instead of just buildings because I think it fits a lot better with the architect bloodlines.

Will the Danevirke be expanded on as a Wonder?

Would it be possible for modders to tie holding upgrades to wonders in the province? (For example, if a modder decides to make a City of Wonders style wonder to represent a city such as Constantinople or Rome that's just chock full of buildings worthy of being called a wonder, could they then tie something like Constantinople's current Theodosian Walls upgrade to that wonder so that any appropriate holding in the county can benefit from it?)

This is nice stuff, but at the same time we kinda need a proper bugfix patch first before any new content is added.

I don’t know if this has been suggested yet, but I think it would be nice adding grand mausoleums, maybe in honor of your wife or father. It could be also nice having it built for you dynasty in general. All of your previous rulers could be buried there.
Belated reply to this, so sorry! Definitely a nifty idea for Pagan religions, at the very least. Christian rulers were typically buried in cathedrals, and it became tradition for some noble houses to have one specific cathedral that housed most of the members of the family, as far as I remember. Definitely could make for a good add-on for cathedrals, at the very least!

If you do Egyptian paganism please add Akhenatenism heresy.
Does completing a great wonder give a bloodline as well?

Surely it's basically already in as Zunism?

They'd just need to change the localization of the god names with Egyptian cultures like they were supposed to do for Greek cultured Hellenics but still haven't fixed.

Worshipping the sun doesn't make religions the same. If it did all pagans would be called thunder worshippers and all abrahamic religions would be the same thing.
